Chapter Thirteen

Emily didn’t want to get up and head to work the next morning. Her warm bed held so much greater allure than facing Conor. Only the fear of being fired finally forced her out, but she couldn’t say she was exactly awake. She had stayed up until the small hours, working on her suggestions for his flat until she had a file of pictures of furniture, fabrics, china and knickknacks, downloaded and printed. Part of her had wanted to abandon the task, sure that she would be fired anyway, but a greater part had wanted to do an excellent job. She had even contemplated heading to his flat with the key he had given her for the purpose to check out some details. In the dead of the night it had seemed like a good idea, but she had managed to stop herself in time.

She came downstairs for breakfast only to find out that Sandra wasn’t there. Retracing her steps, she headed to Sandra’s room where she found her sister still in bed.

“I’m not going to work,” she declared from underneath the duvet she had pulled over her head. Her behaviour was so ridiculous that Emily huffed in exasperation and went to yank the cover off.

“If I have to face Conor after what happened yesterday, you can bloody well face your bosses!” In the end, coaxing Sandra out of bed and getting her leave to work banished her own anxieties, and she left feeling tolerably calm.

Her misgivings returned tenfold when she stood at the closed door between her office and Conor’s, ready to bring him his morning coffee. A wave of nausea swept through her and it took quite a lot of psyching before she could perform the simple task of opening the door and stepping into his room.

Only to find out that it was empty.

“Well, bugger.” When she finally summoned the courage to face him, he should have the decency to be there to be faced. Huffing in annoyance, she went to his desk and put down the tray on the surface that was mercifully empty of messages from their perpetrator; the dread of seeing Conor had banished all other potential fears.

“Good morning, Miss Parr.”

Conor’s cool voice came from the direction of the door and she turned instantly towards him. Seeing him wiped away all her apprehensions and instead she felt—exhilarated. There was no other word for it. Looking at him as he stood there in his expensive suit, tall and imposing, regarding her steadily—assessing her—made her positively happy. She desired him, yes—the mere memory of that strong body pressing against hers was enough to arouse her—but this was more than physical. That hard face of his, those blue eyes and firm lips, his strong, cleanly-shaven jaw, and that slightly overgrown dark hair made her heart quicken and her breath catch in her throat.

This cannot be happening to me, she groaned in her mind, but her face remained calm—she hoped—as she nodded to him. “Good morning, Mr Peters. Here is your morning coffee.
