Chapter Sixteen

“Wake up.”

Riley blinked awake. He stretched and pushed himself upright. His muscles protested the movement, as well as the awkward and uncomfortable sleeping position. He’d dreamed. Riley wasn’t sure if his proximity to his bodyguard had made things worse or better. His dreams were spliced with memory, experience, and a horrifying mixture of fantasy and reality, leaving him more than a little unsettled. “Where are we?”

He recognized the name of the hotel chain they were parked in front of. Riley raised an eyebrow. The hotels ran from barely functioning with questionable bedding and optional cleaning to the high end of the mid-range hotels. It was not a luxury hotel, but he doubted they could pay cash for a room here, and a questionable credit card most likely wouldn’t work.

“Pool is open until ten, which means you have just over an hour to swim.”

“Yes! Thank you!”

“We’re on the first floor.”

Riley nodded and got out of the car, stretching again before grabbing his duffel bag and following Kaden into the side entrance of the hotel. Kaden handed Riley a white plastic key card.

“Room one-fifteen. Vending machines are halfway down the hall across from the elevator.” Kaden opened the door to the room and stepped inside.

Riley followed Kaden into the room and stopped at Kaden’s signal, waiting while the other man checked out the bedroom and bathroom, even opening the door of the closet and all of the drawers. Riley was on the cusp of reminding Kaden that people weren’t actually small enough to fit in the drawers, when Riley realized that he was also looking for bugs. Riley shivered. He wasn’t sure if Kaden was being paranoid or if there was actually a reason to worry.

“Please tell that was a precautionary measure only.”

Kaden stood, turned around, and raised an eyebrow. “And what do you think I was doing?”

“Looking for bugs.” Riley crossed his arms over his chest. “You don’t think they’ve found us already, do you?”

“No, I don’t think they’ve found us already. However, if I know what things look like beforehand, it’s easier to figure out what has changed,” Kaden replied. “Do you have swim trunks with you? I can’t imagine the hotel will be thrilled with a skinny dipper in a family pool.”

“Yes. Although, come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve gone skinny dipping before. That sounds like fun. Something I definitely need to try.”

Kaden shook his head. “By the way, where were those? I’ve seen inside your backpack.”

“Snagged them from the suitcase in New Orleans before we mailed it back.”

“Wishful thinking?”

Riley shrugged. Honestly, there wasn’t a good reason why he’d kept the swim trunks. They had fallen out when he’d added another change of clothes to his bag. He’d shoved them into the pack without really thinking about it. He still wasn’t sure if he’d grabbed them because he hadn’t believed Kaden or if he’d wanted the other man to be wrong. Riley yanked out the trunks and headed into the bathroom to change.

Stepping back out
