Chapter 18
Emberly loved a good party.
Hell, she loved a bad party too. As long as she had some fun, it was all good to her.
And this was shaping up to be a good oneâespecially once the ibyxians showed up with a barrel of grog and platters of food. And Emberly was never a girl to say no to food.
âPour me out another one!â she shouted over the trilling tune coming from the accordion and hornpipes, thrusting her empty mug under the spout of the barrel.
âBaaaa,â the ibyxian girl manning it replied, cranking the spigot until Emberlyâs mug nearly overflowed.
Tipping her mug in salute to the sailor, Emberly turned around, taking a swig as she watched Ariana and Fable dance a jig around the mast, ibyxians clapping along and hooting with delight and mirth.
The demoness grinned, leaning against the rail of the ship, soaking in the display. Even Rina, initially sullen and suspicious, had gotten into the spirit of thingsâthough that might have had more to do with her deep indulgence in the spirits. The dragoness, in her half-elven guise, was performing some impressive tricks, blowing out gouts of flames to the amazement and delight of their visitors. Emberly chortled, wondering if she should intervene, then shrugged, deciding maybe later.
But she hadnât lived this long by relaxing her guard, even in the midst of a party, so she noticed quickly the white-cloaked figure scuttling through the throngs on the wharves, picking their way up towards The Dragonâs Wing. Taking a last swig of her ale, Emberly put it aside and positioned herself in the path of the figureâs ascent up the gangplank.
âWhoa there, whatâs your hurry?â the demoness asked, baring her fangs to give the intruder further pause. âThis partyâs invitation only.â
âEmberly?â
Squinting, the demoness drew back in surprise when she saw Stellaâs face, half-hidden in the shadow of the hood. âHey! Look who it is.â
âWho?â
Emberly glanced over as Fable trotted up, the faunâs cheeks flushed from drink and exertion. But when Fable caught sight of the elfâs face, her expression soured into a pout. âYou look familiarâ¦â
âShe should,â Emberly said with a saucy grin. âLast time you saw her, she was grinding in Dorianâs lap.â
âOh!â Fable said, her pout deepening, arms crossing. âItâs you. What do you want?â
âI need to see Dorian. Itâs important!â Stella hissed.
âWhy? So you can give him another lap dance?â Fable asked. âBesides, heâs not here.â
âWell, where is he? I need to give him a message!â
âHe went for a ride. Donât know when heâll be back. So just give us the message and weâll tell him when he gets here,â Fable replied.
Stella bit her lip, and Emberly gave the dark elf a closer look. The pensiveness felt wrong, coming from the formerly festive dancer. Even when sheâd been with Dorian and getting information from her last time, the elf had never shown such unease. The sight quickly sobered Emberly, a feeling of infectious alarm trickling into her.
âYou can come aboard,â Emberly said, nodding her head. âWe can talk in the captainâs cabin.
