I wasnât stupid. Well, maybe I wasâit depended on who you asked. I had no intention of risking my life if I didnât absolutely have to. I was still thinking it over the next morning, wondering where else I could get the information I needed, when Willow threw a spanner in the works.
âIâve had enough,â she said, looking around at us challengingly.
Ash, Christian, and I were sitting with her around the dining table in the main pavilion, finishing off a light meal before bedâassuming anyone could sleep. Zinnia had apparently interpreted light meal as light meal for twenty people. As well as providing little sweet cakes, enough sandwiches to feed a small army, and tomatoes and wild mushrooms fried in butter, sheâd also given us eggs in just about every form known to man or faeâfried, scrambled with onion and peppers, boiled, poached, and served with delicious hollandaise sauce.
Despite thinking I was too stressed to eat, Iâd somehow managed to consume enough eggs to turn into a chicken. I had definitely had enough, but I didnât think Willow was talking about how full she was.
âOf ⦠?â I prompted when she said no more.
âOf having these Vipers crawling all over my garden like fleas on a dog.â
âThey werenât trying to kill us this time,â I said.
âSpeak for yourself,â Christian said, a surly expression on his face. Weâd said no more about his uselessness as a fighter, but clearly it still rankled. âThey were certainly trying to kill me.â
I glanced at Ash. They hadnât shown any desire to keep him alive either, but he said nothing. Heâd been very quiet since the attackâeven more so than usual, and he wasnât exactly a chatterbox at the best of times. Heâd only said three things in the last hour, and then only because heâd been directly addressed. He sat, head down, applying himself with what seemed like excessive focus to the business of eating.
Well, I could understand that. Fighting made me hungry, too. Exhibit A: the five million eggs Iâd just consumed. My stomach felt as though it were full of lead. If any more Vipers showed up now, Iâd have to ask them to take a rain check. There was no way I was fighting again until I digested these babies.
Willow smiled briefly at Christian, her hand resting on his on the white tablecloth. âI donât care what their intention wasâIâm fed up with having them waltzing in here like they own the place. Itâs ridiculous. A sith is supposed to be impenetrable.â
I sighed. âTell that to the Vipers.â
She glared at me, as if all this was my fault somehow. âCanât you stop your bloody father from using Nevith to get in here? This is insane.â
âCanât you fix your bloody wards so Nevith no longer has access?â I returned, feeling peeved. How was I supposed to stop Fallon doing anything? Iâd known about my necromantic powers for all of five minutes. Did she expect me to be an expert in their use already?
She threw her hands up in exasperation.
