Alison arrived at the clearing. No one was there. She maneuvered her car so she could drive straight out if she had to leave in a hurry. She was a bit early for the scheduled meet but also worried. She’d heard some static in her ear a few moments before.

“T1, status please.”

Silence.

“T1?”

Maybe there’s an issue with the communications. Maybe she lost or broke hers. That could explain the static. Alison didn’t want to contemplate alternatives. She’d wait a little longer, then check in with the parents. Her mission was complete. She would be allowed to seek contact with them, although she would have to do so by a precise protocol.

“Hello?”

The unfamiliar male voice in her ear startled Alison. She remained silent. Waiting.

“Hello? Whoever is on the other side of this, I advise you to answer.”

There could be only one reason it wasn’t Alexa who was speaking. She’s been captured!

“I know you hear me.”

Alison refused to answer.

“Whoever you are, you should know we have the girl who was wearing this. She’s in a lot of trouble. She shot a very important person. If she was acting on your orders, you should come forward. She might be given some lenience if you turn yourself in. She seems young. Won’t do well in prison. You good with that?”

Stunned, Alison stayed silent. I shot my target. Did she shoot hers also and just not get away? Or do they think Alexa is me?

Alison grabbed the paper map of the city and began studying it. If they have Alexa, it’s likely they’ll take her to the police station for questioning. She’s probably in a holding cell, or perhaps an interview room. If I don’t answer, maybe they’ll think I’ve abandoned her to save my own skin. Maybe they won’t expect an attempt to free her.

Knowing this was a training event set up by her parents, Alison wasn’t sure when and how it was considered over. She hadn’t thought to ask. Stupid. Won’t make that mistake again. She thought back to when she was eleven and she hadn’t quit until she’d simply collapsed, and Sam had brought her into the house. Was she expected to push the boundaries like that again? Or should she contact her parents and report that her side of the mission was complete. But then, what about Alexa? She wondered how much the people in town knew of the training event. Are they all in on it? Do they know we’re twins? Is the man speaking to me part of the game or not?

Alison thought about her parents. They were masterminds at setting up these kinds of scenarios. She guessed only a few people were involved in the training. She remembered the confusion on the drivers’ faces during her escape. She didn’t think they were involved. Just innocents caught in the process. She decided it didn’t matter who knew what. She couldn’t leave Alexa. Together as one. That was their motto. If she couldn’t rescue her twin, then they’d both go down together.
