Chapter 16

“Are you sure you’re trying?” I asked Luna skeptically while rolling my chair back and forth out of boredom. I wasn’t quite sure why I was needed to be present during Luna’s training for her flame power. We still weren’t even sure if she even held the power at all.

“Yes, I am trying!” she yelled out of frustration.

She put her hands up in front of her chest, keeping a small space between her palms as she closed her eyes tightly and pursed her lips.

We had been keeping this up for about an hour by now. Luna would take this stance and try to make a small fire ball in her hands but was failing every time.

I could tell that her frustration was beginning to come to a boiling point. I pursed my lips as I thought of how to help her. I wondered what I would do if I were in this situation, I thought back to when I discovered my powers. It was accidental. It just kind of… happened. It was learning to harness them that was the hard part, but Luna hadn’t even used her fire power yet. Although, there was still a chance she didn’t even have the power.

As soon as I had come up with an idea, I walked over towards her and put out both of my hands.

“What are you doing?” she asked as she looked me up and down.

“Take my hands. I’m going to help you.”

She sighed before putting her hands in mine. I pinched her fingers while slightly freezing them.

“Ouch!” she yelled, melting the ice and slightly burning me.

“God damn…” I muttered as I gripped my burnt fingertips.

“Sorry, sorry…” she said as she held her hands tightly to her chest.

Jay stood up from his chair, slowly approaching us. “She burnt you?”

Luna looked up to me, smiling slowly. “I did, didn’t I?”

“Yes, you did,” I said with a smile as I fanned my fingers while cooling them off with a bit of ice to suppress the heat from the burn. “Now just take that feeling and use it whenever you want to use your flame.”

“Okay, let me try this.” She stretched her hands out before flicking her finger towards the wall of the basement. We waited a moment for something to happen but were disappointed by the silent room that surrounded us.

“Hey, watch it! If you actually do manage to get fire to come out at some point, then you’re going to burn down my whole house!”

“Then where do you suppose I put the fire, genius? Outside where everyone can see?”

Jay sighed before going back onto his computer.

“Is whatever you’re doing on your computer really more important than this?” Luna asked.

“Yes,” he answered simply without looking away from the screen.

“I have another idea,” I announced, changing the subject.

“What is it?”

“Go stand over there,” I instructed Luna as I pointed towards the other side of the basement.

She did as she was told, staring at me curiously as she did.

Out of nowhere before I could prepare her, I struck a line of ice towards her.
