“We can both have other friends, right?”

“No!” I snapped. But then I did remember. “It’s just that you’re so much better than I am at karate, and now you’re replacing me with someone who’s up to your skill level. But I was your friend first! Plus,” I mumbled, “I miss you.”

“I miss you, too,” she said. “And I promise that as soon as this karate competition is over, we’ll go back to hanging out like normal.”

“Really?” I smiled hopefully. “With no more Emily?”

“Emily is really nice,” she said seriously. “And to be honest, Arizona, I don’t think it’s fair for you to say I can’t be friends with her at all!”

It felt horrible to hear that, mostly because it was true.

“You have a point,” I said, kicking the ground. “I mean, we can both have other friends, right?”

“Right,” Mareya said. “And we can have some of the same friends, too. Maybe you and Emily can both come over next weekend.”

These days, Mareya and I are back to being fantastic friends. And when she spends time with Emily, I either hang out with them or see my other friends.

So, dear Jealous, I guess I’m trying to say that jealousy is a yucky feeling that nobody likes, but most people experience it once in a while. If you can give your friend some space, things will probably go back to normal before too long. And instead of worrying that your friend is replacing you, maybe you can try getting to know the new girl and some other kids, too. There’s really no limit on the number of friends you can have!
