CHAPTER 25

Ron

“So our only options are to wait or go back in, guns blazing, and get Sarah...” I huffed, while I limp-paced over the same spot, doing my best to ignore the throbbing pain in my right calf.

The radio was set on a low crackle so we could hear Sarah if she called again. We didn’t expect this, though, as we assumed she was still hiding... or worse, she had been captured.

Joey kept his eyes fixed on his feet, rubbing furrows into his temples.

I continued, “But neither of us has been in a gun battle, and one of us is bound to get hurt or worse...”

Joey’s head popped up and he glared at me—I wondered if I said something he took wrong. Then he looked up and around from where we were hunkered behind the warehouse, beside an overflowing and very fragrant dumpster.

Before he could say what he had in mind, my radio chirped and both of us held our collective breath.

“Attention Ron and Sarah. This is Nan. The bad guys are headed your way. The bad guys are headed your way. Get out!”

I abruptly clicked the talk button. “Nanette, it’s Ron.”

“Oh, thank God. You have to be careful. I think...”

I didn’t even try to interrupt her. Instead I clicked my microphone button multiple times, and continued to click it for almost a minute to block out anything she might say that could have given away any of our positions.

When I stopped, the radio was silent.

“Please stay off the radio. It’s public, and anyone can hear you. And yes, we know about what’s coming. Are you all right?”

“Yes... Ah, sorry. I didn’t know... I’m fine, but my ex-husband”—she snickered—“is not going to be sitting down for a while. Your dog took a bite out of his south-bound quarters.”

“I’ll call you back later. Hang tight,” I said, not really wanting to ask what she meant about her ex-husband. I probably should be concerned, but...

“Do you still have the other truck keys?” Joey interrupted my mental meanderings. I glanced at him. It was obvious he had something in mind.

“Yes, of course.” I said, patting the bulge in my velcroed calf-side pocket.

“Let me have them. I have an idea, sir.”

“Here, Joey.” I handed him the whole mess of truck keys, hoping he’d fill me in on his plan. “And please call me Ronald.”

“Okay... Ronald... I’m going to create a diversion so you can get Sarah out. I’ll find a way back to your home.”

“Wait, I can’t leave you here.”

“Sir, I mean Ronald, you’ll have a hard enough time getting out of here with Sarah. Let me draw them away from you. After all you all have done, it’s the least I could do.” He looked at me, and even though we were both hanging in the shadows of this dreary day, I could see he was emotional about this.

“Okay, but take this.” I held out my radio, but he wouldn’t take it from me.

Instead he clutched my wrist and said, “Thank you, Ronald. But if I lose the radio or worse, get caught, they can tell what frequencies you use.
