Ari stared at him as much as possible in the dim street light. There had been something in his tone she hadn’t been able to figure out. No surprise; she had been struggling with figuring him out for a while. “Marc? What’s really going on? What was my sister talking about? Elliot? And how does it tie into what happened to Jillian and Rafe that day?” And how did it involve him?

“Solpalmitraln is one of the main components of Opal Joy. It’s a meth based street drug. Twice as deadly. Maybe more. It’s bad, and it’s spreading through Texas. I’m trying to stop it, but apparently I’m not fast enough. It shouldn’t have been in Garrity. My people—Elliot is heading a small task force throughout the state—should have stopped it. It’s spreading, baby, and I don’t know how to stop it before someone else dies. Most have been young people. Like Syd and Pen and even as young as Simon.”

“And you think this has something to do with the bombing at the hotel last night? The abduction attempt last week?”

“Yes.” There was such start anger—and pain—in his tone, Ari acted before thinking it through.

She wrapped her arms around him, hugging him hard. “You’ll find the answers; I have no doubt about that at all.”

Marc’s arms went around her and she looked up at him.

Just as his head lowered.

Marc kissed her, right there in the middle of the road, under a dim street light and the Texas stars.

Heat and nerves and a sense of rightness shot straight through her. This was what it was supposed to be like when someone kissed you. This. Her hands tightened on his shirt and Ari tried to pull him closer. To feel him pressed against her, blocking out the rest of the world.

Ari kissed him back until she heard Jillian yelling her name somewhere in her childhood home. She pulled back first. “I…I need to get inside. Jillian, Lacy…I just need to go.”

Like the coward she was, Ari took off back inside. Before she did or said something that ruined it all.
