Chapter 12

Gage

After Lily left the library I thanked Paige for the information about my suspects. My cell buzzed with an incoming text. With a quick glance at Dax, I said, “We need to go. Now.”

He never asked a question; he just fell into step beside me as our pace brought us to the front door in record time. Once we were outside I scanned the area until my eyes found Lily and Nikki. “There.”

We jogged down the steps, and she held her hand up to stop us from getting too close. “Sorry to interrupt you with Paige, but this is important.” She pointed to a small green canister on the ground, half covered in some grass clippings. “Don’t touch it. But I believe that tiny canister is how the Devil’s Hemlock was dispersed.”

“You know this, how?” I was cautious and wished she had more space between her and the canister. I didn’t know much about poisons that were a magical combination, but since Dax wasn’t freaking out, I figured there was some measure of safety. The only reason I knew it was a non-magical combination was Dax mentioned it earlier today. How a non-magical got their hands on it was a huge question mark. But did Lily know what it really was?

Her eyes went wide as she crossed her arms over her midsection. “For the record, I didn’t touch it. However, I cast a spell when I discovered it. Just to be safe.”

Nikki nodded. “Neither of us did. But how are you going to take it into evidence and have it confirmed by a lab that this was the murder weapon? It’s lethal.”

Dax had pulled out an evidence bag, from where I didn’t ask or really care. “I think we’ll need that to be doubled. Just in case it gets punctured.”

“Consider it done.” He looked at Nikki and Lily. “If you can stand on either side, and we’ll create a shield. I can get it into the bag without touching it.”

“Magical camouflage?” Lily asked. “Good idea.”

“Yes.” He knelt on the ground close to the small canister. It reminded me of a perfume atomizer and said, “Go for it.”

Lily and Nikki said some words very softly and nothing seemed to change until Dax stood and zipped the bag closed. It was a seamless transfer, and if anyone had happened to see us, they wouldn’t have realized that Dax never touched it.

“We’ll get this to EL, and he can arrange for it to be handled with the utmost care. I’m going to suggest a face mask and heavy-duty chemical gloves.” Dax waved a hand over the bag and gave me a reassuring smile. “I’ve added an industrial strength protection spell as well. It won’t interfere with the identification but it will protect all involved.”

“Good.” I didn’t want anyone else to become collateral damage with this recent discovery. “Thanks for convincing Paige to talk with me. She didn’t give me much more than I already knew, but I think she’s still hiding something.”
