CHAPTER NINE

Surprise, surprise. The Leshak hadn’t given me all of the details about this job. Now that we were at the forest’s edge, he filled me in, and I’ll admit to being less than happy, but polite in my objections.

“You rancid smear of dwarf shit.” I snarled at the Leshak’s back, not caring if dwarves really existed or not. “You said that we were guiding people through a wood, not looking for them inside it.”

The Leshak started riding towards the forest about five seconds after informing me that the caravan we were supposed to escort had gone missing in the Chained Forest. From the set of his shoulders, it looked like he was intent on entering that horror show whether I joined him or not.

“I fail to see how any of these details change anything.” called the Leshak over his shoulder as he drew closer to the forest.

I called back, refusing to nudge my own horse into following the Leshak.

“There’s a big difference between that, where we can maybe cut across the narrowest point of this whole mess, and going on a wild goose chase for a bunch of people who’ve already died without us.”

“Wild goose chase.” replied the Leshak. “What a horridly appropriate phrase!”

“Why do I get the feeling that you’re not taking me seriously?”

“Because I do not need you, Aden Flint, to keep me safe from the forest.” said the Leshak.

“Wait, what?” I said, barely able to hear him over the distance he’d put between us. “God damnit, hold up a moment.”

I motioned my horse towards the Leshak, and it caught up with him in good time. For a moment, the horse looked like it would keep moving past the Leshak, and into the forest itself, but I drew it up short before that became an issue.

“Wait, why are you so confident about your chances in that forest?” I asked.

The Leshak sighed then finally brought his own horse to a stop.

“What are you sitting on?” he asked.

“A horse.” I said, pausing as I remembered how he’d called it out of the mud. “Kind of.”

“You are sitting on a horse that I summoned from the earth itself, to be specific.” said the Leshak. “Many fae have their own specialties. Overgrowth is my own. There has not yet been a plant seeded in Faerie or elsewhere that gives me cause for fear. And if you do your job and stay close enough to protect me from what lies inside of that forest, you will have no reason to fear these wretched trees as well.”

That last bit made my hair raise.

“What kind of threats are you expecting inside there, if not the trees?” I asked.

“The dregs of past caravans that weren’t fortunate enough to have us tasked to their rescue,” he said. “There are those who know how to hide from the forest, Aden Flint. To sneak and crawl and hide to their benefit. Some have been there for longer than even I have been alive, and I assure you that by now, they are all quite feral.
