Chapter 16

Lee extended his hand to Aries, who stared at it for some time before deciding to use it to help her leave the surprisingly comfortable ground and stand to her feet. She could tell by his expression that he wasn’t sure how to act, worried that she may be upset by the loss. But as competitive as she was, losing very rarely upset her, so long as the contest was fair and she had given it her all.

“I hope we put on a good show,” she said, still struggling to catch her breath.

“It was brilliant, never heard them cheer like that, especially, ya know, when you knocked me about.”

“Knocked you down, you mean,” she corrected, causing him to put his familiar smirk back on his face.

“Look, no hard feelings, yeah? It was a quality fight,” he said.

“Of course, but you better not have held back.”

“Believe me, if I give my word, I always keep it. If I seemed off, it was due to my bloody leg, special thanks to you. Come, let’s find Mum and drink whatever concoction she has for us, yeah? We need to get rid of this pain and get ready for the champions’ dinner.”

“Sounds good to me. I am ready for my ribs to stop hurting so I can breathe normally again.” She rubbed her ribs and smiled sheepishly at Lee. “No offense, but nothing you did compared to Wolfe’s strikes.”

“Oh really, and how did that work for him?” he asked in an offended tone.

Aries and Lee walked to the fighters’ tents, where they were greeted by Mum, Andrew, Jaseen, and Kristoff. Their congratulations and excitement made her headache feel even worse.

“The Romani has earned not only first but second place as well, tourney champion and runner up. When was the last time that’s happened? Has it ever even happened?” Andrew asked, his enthusiasm barely contained. “Mum, has this ever happened before?”

“Quiet, darling. Remember, they just got done fighting one another and may appreciate some peace and quiet,” she said patiently to Andrew. Then she turned to Lee and Aries. “Here, I’ve made a cup for each of you. It is best to drink it quickly and maybe plug your nose.” She handed them each a small jar containing a dark green substance that was so thick it barely passed for liquid. “Oh, I am so very proud of you two! You were both brilliant!”

Aries hoped that whatever it was didn’t smell like the unholy tonic Mum used to wake people. Lee quickly downed his drink and made an awful face indicating his disgust. Despite seeing that the green goo was less than pleasant going down, her ribs hurt so badly she was willing to face whatever horrible taste awaited her, and, with a couple of quick gulps, she was able to chug it completely, doing her best to appear as though it was a simple glass of water. She wiped her mouth and gave a cocky look to Lee who was still battling the aftertaste.
