THE MILLIONAIRE MYTH

There’s a pervasive myth among people that we can all click our heels and pretend that taxes don’t matter to the rich. When Florida resident Rush Limbaugh publicly announced that he would never broadcast from New York again because of a new millionaire’s tax proposal (which Rush said is like “punishing the achievers for the mistakes and the lack of discipline on the part of a bunch of corrupt politicians”), New York governor David Paterson personally responded. Did he offer a deal, or maybe a promise that the tax would be only temporary?

Nope. He offered a snarky, elitist attack that shows just how out of touch politicians can be. “If I knew that would be the result,” Paterson said, “I would’ve thought about the taxes earlier.”

Funny stuff! So, despite a massive deficit that forced New York agencies to produce “Doomsday Budgets,” the governor apparently felt like it was fine to watch a guy who makes $54 million a year publicly leave town, depriving his state and city of what could be millions of dollars a year in tax revenue.
