Figure 6-1: Callus on my bow hand. The knuckle of my bow thumb looks abnormal. It is calloused as it supports the recurve bow when I shoot. Depending on the size of your hands, you might or might not get calloused. I use a nail file to reduce the thickness of the callus.

Figure 6-2: My string fingers (right) are bigger than my bow fingers (left). The sun rises on my right hand side. Hence, my right hand is darker than my left hand.

One of my students took a job in another state and didn’t visit for over a year. On the first day he came back, he asked, “Are your fingers broken?” I said, “No.” He was looking at my string fingers. From his angle, it must have looked bad. My index and middle fingers are bent a few degrees more to the right than normal and are bigger than my bow fingers (see Figure 6-2). No wonder he thought they were broken.

The degree of discomfort you will experience will depend on your goal. A goal of shooting 100 arrows a day is reasonable. It will take about 40 minutes to do so. A goal of shooting 100,000 arrows in one year is not practical. If you do, you may rush and ignore safety precautions. This could lead to harmful consequences. A more realistic goal would be to shoot 50 quality shots a day–shots properly aimed and released with the mind totally focused.
