CHAPTER SEVEN
My eyes widened and shoulders grew taut as I stared at my dadâs sleepwalking and talking form. Watching so many words roll from his mouth was creepy enough in itself. As a man of few words, he rarely communicated with words when a look would suffice. As a man largely deaf, those rarities were far more often expressed with his hands as opposed to his mouth.
Skaath was right, though. The thing speaking right now sure as Hell wasnât my dad. What was it though, and why was it now talking about my wanting to negotiate ⦠a pact.
I froze. There were only three things in Faerie that Iâd spoken to about pacts. The first was the Erlking, Iron Lord of goblins, half-bloods, and orcs. The pact between us was more of honor and loyalty as opposed to magical bargains, so this wasnât his doing. Second was Skaath, but judging from the meek awe in her voice when sheâd warned me just now, this sure as Hell wasnât her either.
The only option left was the one Iâd come to Faerie to acquire in the first place. Not just a pact with someone from Faerie. A pact with the land of Faerie itself. A land that at this very moment was, if my guess was right, possessing my father in much the same way that Skaath borrowed the bodies of blackbirds when she was in the mortal world.
I let out a shaky break. Ok, then. A magical spirit - no. The most magical spirit, or collection of spirits, to have ever existed was driving my dadâs body around like a rental car. But whatever she - it? they? - had to offer, a pact for power didnât matter if I couldnât keep him safe, and I couldnât keep him safe for as long as he stayed in this land of wonders and horrible ways to die.
âGreetings, land of Faerie.â I replied, my voice cracking with barely suppressed tension. âThank you for agreeing to bargain with me.â
The thing controlling dad nodded once in acknowledgement, the motion drifting and dream-like.
I shook my head, trying not to get distracted at just how damn strange this whole thing was.
âFirst things first.â I said. âWill a pact between us be enough for me to pass from Faerie to the mortal world freely?â
âIt will, though not from, or to, the parcel of land within which you now sit.â replied the chorus of voices drifting from my dadâs mouth. âA high lady with our pact once held claim to these tracts, and though her blood has long since rejoined the sky, her ban on crossings remains for as long as we dream.â
âBut with your pact, I can still get back to the mortal world if I get far enough away from this hut?â
âBeyond the mortal eyeâs sight should be more than enough distance.â replied the spirits. âWhat bargain do you intend to make in exchange for such a boon?â
I didnât bother answering the spirits in any direct way.
