“So, they really are nothing more than ordinary bats?” Emmy asked incredulously, after having seen what they had seen.

“They really big,” Cairo added.

“Yes, they do indeed look big. That is what has kept people away from these tombs for centuries. You both know how superstitious Egyptians were … many still are.”

They did, and they confirmed to Rose that they did. Cairo had wanted to say that today it was folklore rather than superstition. He knew the word for ‘folklore’ in Arabic, though having no idea what it was in English he said nothing more.

“So,” Emmy said hesitantly before continuing in the same manner, “we looked through magic … that magic did nothing more than magnify a small area of bats … making them appear as big as monsters.”

“That’s basically it ... fear does the rest!”

“Alex could not work out which way to go … because, you say, the bats had swept away all the dust.”

“Yes, Emmy. Thousands of them fly in and out of that end of the tunnel at least twice every night. The movement of their wings is enough to send any amount of dust elsewhere.”

“Any you know this, how? … Sorry, that sounded–”

Rose cut across her: “Don’t worry so much, I do know what you must be thinking. I only know because there was a similar problem at Dendera a few years ago. You both know what it is like there.” They did. “At that time I checked into many, not all, similar superstitions around Egypt. That was the first time I ever came here and saw the effect for myself. I found out, not from people locally, but up north, close to Tanis, that one family of warlocks perfected this magnifying spell. They were basically one trick warlocks, but by protecting tombs they made a good living for many generations.”

“What happened to them?” Cairo asked.

“Nobody really knows, but that is how I know what you came across today.”

Cairo looked a little embarrassed.

Rose went over and gave him a hug: “Nothing to feel embarrassed about. The way you described the monsters is exactly how they were meant to be described. Listening to you would put anybody off going in there, and, after all, that is the sole purpose of the spell.”

Cairo still felt a little foolish, but he liked the hug, even though he was very hungry.
