“No. I. Don’t. Want. To. Go. To. The. Dance. With. You…” Azar enunciated slowly, just in case the wide-eyed, wide-nosed fox shifter didn’t understand the first time.

"Why?" he prompted, clearly not getting it.

Azar was at a loss of a proper response.

The boy poked her shoulder, licking his bulging lips—smearing them with a generous amount of slimy saliva. "Are you too good for the likes of us?"

Haltingly, she answered, "No, it’s—it’s not that." She stared fixedly at her sneakered feet, her cheeks reddened and worsening.

"I’m just asking for a partner at the dance. Why are you acting so high and mighty?"

Her. Azar. High and mighty. Okay then.

In a short time, the jitters would set in, and he showed no indication of letting up. She would soon be shaking uncontrollably. "No." Still avoiding his eyes.

"Leave her be. We all know she’ll be attending the formal alone," a smallish boy nearby—long hair severely pulled back from his gaunt face—snarled.

If only they knew how appealing that idea was to her. Azar preferred to stay cooped up in her room. If she had a way of avoiding general trainings, she would gladly, whole-heartedly, ever-so-enthusiastically, snatch it up.

Her classmates knew she was a phoenix—the only one at the school—and that brought her unnecessary attention. She refused to believe it had anything to do with her small pixie face, her perfectly defined brows, jaunty nose, or clear olive skin.

"Because you’re beautiful, and a phoenix, you think you can trample on anyone." His voice had turned frosty.

"I—ah," she started, then gave up. Like seriously, what was she even supposed to say to that? They were free to think what they liked of her, just like Ava did at this point. She’d consistently rebuffed Ava’s offers to join their table or walk with them to class. Ava and her friends surely thought her a terrible snob by now as well.

Mercifully, Miss Peabody, out of breath and red in the face, announced that the class was over. Hastily, Azar flung her books into her backpack.

"Azar?"

She pretended not to hear. Sometimes that worked and they left her alone. People hurried out, some headed to a separate training and others—like those smaller animals who hadn’t manifested into their second transformations yet—headed to the dorms.

She had MT next, and this person was going to slow her down.

"Azar, wait." The person held onto her bag and drew her back. She caught Ava dashing her a concerned glance, so she smiled and nodded to indicate that she was okay.

"Yes?" she finally answered, her voice thin, injected with all the weariness she felt.

"Can we walk together?"

Azar stared at the swirling patterns on her sneakers, nervously twisting her bag, "Sure." She knew he barely heard her tiny voice. "B—but, I’m going for—"

"MT, I know."

Her dark hair jerked, a semblance of a nod.

"I was wondering—"

She looked up and regarded the speaker for the first time. She recognized him—a wolf shifter from her year. His forehead was large, as were his eyes.

"—if you would like to hang out with me this evening," he finished.
