Rachel stayed by Holly’s side as she was treated for several bruised ribs in addition to multiple facial bruises and contusions. Photos were taken, and a full police report was filed by both Holly and Rachel. They prayed and cried, renewing their friendship with a bond made stronger by their shared nightmare experiences.

It was nearly six o’clock when they got back to Rachel’s house. After settling her friend in her bed, Rachel went outside to call Luke.

“Hi, darlin’,” he answered. Rachel’s heart lifted at the excitement in his voice.

She tried not to sound emotionally exhausted. “Something happened today.”

“You okay?”

“I am, but I need to stay in tonight.” She hoped she wouldn’t have to explain.

Silence. Oh, Luke, don’t be upset.

“What happened?”

“I, um … I can’t.”

“You sure you’re okay?”

“Positive.” She knew she was failing to reassure him.

“I can come over. We could go for a walk. You sound like you could use a friend about now.”

“I don’t think I’ll be very good company tonight. It’s been an awful day.”

“I was looking forward to seeing you.”

The disappointment in his voice comforted her. It would be nice to feel his strong arms around her. “Okay, sure.”

“Good. I’ll be over in a little bit.”

“See you then.”

Rachel went inside and peeked in on Holly. She was sound asleep. Rachel was relieved Holly was going to be all right. The doctor had assured them everything physical would heal, but how long it would take for Holly to recover emotionally? How long until she could trust a man again? A year and half later, Rachel still wasn’t quite sure she could trust Luke. A slow smile curved her lips as his words echoed in her mind. I will never take more than you’re willing to give. Ever. She could trust in that, couldn’t she?

She sat on the front step and bent her head to thank God for bringing her best friend back into her life, for giving her a chance to forgive, and for blessing them both with the courage and strength to fight back. She begged Him to help Holly survive this horrible experience, with a pure heart that would be able to love again. She begged for forgiveness for being too weak and afraid to report it when it had happened to her.

She steeled herself against the pain and soul-crushing guilt when tears threatened, then prayed for all the other women Austin may have hurt. She vowed to do everything she could to put his evil in its place, then asked for God’s help to make the right decisions and do the right things, “… forever and always, every day. Amen.”

She tried to push aside the events of the day as she headed to her shop and turned on her music, opening up one of the overhead doors to enjoy the cool night air. Holly had gotten blood on her white leather passenger seat, so she filled a container with cold water, grabbed a clean shop rag, and worked on the stain.

As she dabbed at the blood, memories of Austin flooded back again.
