CHAPTER 11
The weekend sucked, and not in a good way. It seemed I couldn’t go five whole minutes without thinking of the way Ford had dumped me in the WFI parking lot, and I continued wracking my brain to figure out why.
Had I not shown the appropriate level of compassion for his situation? Had I said something that he had horribly misconstrued?
Or had I said too much, or too little? Had I not thoroughly masked my feelings when the phone call interrupted us, and had he glimpsed the momentary anger on my face?
Regardless of the answer, renewed irritation took root over the weekend and occasionally blossomed into out-and-out fury. And not all of it aimed at Ford, either—although he could claim a large dose of it, nonetheless. I directed most of the wrath at myself. My 106

inner voice had warned me not to get close to the man, hadn’t it?
But did I listen to it? Did I follow its sage guidance?
Fuck, no! I’d gotten pulled into Ford’s little game, whatever the hell that was anyway. I’d abandoned my wiser instincts and had fallen victim to his charm, just as I suspected might happen if I dropped my guard. “Zord” my ass. Yes, I had actually allowed myself to believe that Mallory’s power-couple fantasy could come true. But the reality of what had happened sank in, and when it did, a part of me felt used.
Although intellectually I doubted its veracity, emotionally I couldn’t help but wonder if somehow the whole night had been a ruse, nothing more than another bagel incident, albeit one more elaborate and on a much grander scale. Irrespective of its size, however, the end result was the same. In both incidents, Ford had won, first the bagel, then the blowjob. And true, he had started to reciprocate when it came to the latter, and probably would have finished me off had the urgent phone call not interrupted him.
But if that was what he had truly yearned to do, he certainly hadn’t acted like it. The moment his afterglow had subsided, so, too, did that fresh, outgoing personality he had displayed at the bar.
After his upsetting phone call, I could understand his shift in mood, but something significant had also transpired between us in the SUV that I couldn’t quite comprehend, something that had made him revert to his intolerable manner and bearing. And no longer did he look upon me as a comrade, as a lover, but as a rival once again, one with which he had used and had already grown tired.
Thanks for the suck. See you Monday.
His cold, passionless words kept ringing through my head, and it was all I could do not to drive myself crazy by speculating and 107

over-analyzing every little possibility regarding what might have occurred. All I knew for certain is that I felt Ford had once again acted as the ultimate puppet-master, pulling my strings to see how much of a slave I’d
