In a solicitor’s office, you often need to employ the services of a private investigator. Most frequently this is for the serving of court summons, witness summons and domestic violence injunctions. It can be very time-consuming work and so is rarely carried out by the solicitor. The firm that we used was called Southern Investigations, which is the outfit that has now become notorious for its involvement in telephone hacking and the bungled investigation into the murder of Daniel Morgan.

Daniel was the person I always used to serve my documents. He would be in the office two or three times a week picking up papers and delivering statements, and loved to have a chat and a cup of tea. He had a childlike enthusiasm for his work and was always happy to spin a yarn or two about the world of private detecting. One night at the close of play, he invited me to go for a drink with him in a nearby pub. I could tell there was something on his mind. After a few drinks he came to the point. Would I like to come and work for Southern Investigations? He would pay £30,000 a year, which was not far off double what I was being paid as a solicitor. I told him I would think about it and get back to him. We never did have that follow-up chat. Shortly afterwards, he was found murdered with an axe in his head in a pub car park in Sydenham.

The investigation into his murder is still ongoing some thirty-three years later. It looks like it may never be solved. Whenever I hear his name on a podcast or see his face in the latest TV documentary about the case, I can’t help but remember what a charming little bloke he was. It seems he was potentially involved in some very shady dealings, and I sometimes wonder what my fate might have been if I had taken him up on his offer.
