Chapter

Nineteen

Pounding at the door jolted him awake. Foggy brained, he groped around for his sword, but only found Roxi. She groaned and rolled over, her eyes fluttering open.

“What?” she asked, the word slurred.

Someone knocked again. He reached over and grabbed his phone from the nightstand. Five a.m. Stumbling out of bed, he threw on a robe and looked through the door’s peephole.

Cracking the door, he poked his head out. “What’s going on, Jamaal?”

“Can I come in?” he asked, fidgeting where he stood.

“Is it important?” Luke looked away and yawned.

“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t.”

“It’s alright, Luke. I’m dressed.” Roxi walked by, now wearing a robe, on her way to get something to drink.

Luke stepped out of the way and let Jamaal pass before shutting the door and flipping the lights on. Jamaal set his computer down on the table and opened it up, making himself at home.

“You’re up early,” Roxi said. “Coffee?”

Roxi was probably right. They were probably not going back to sleep, especially not after whatever drove Jamaal to their door this early in the morning. She started the kettle and measured some grinds into the French press they’d brought for these kinds of emergencies.

“Yes, please,” Jamaal replied.

“So, what’s got you up this early?” Luke asked.

“Hersch woke me up. He found something in the spam folder of our ‘tip line.’” He stood up and plugged his HDMI cable into the back of the TV.

Luke, now wide awake thanks to the adrenaline dump of the knocking and Jamaal’s curt urgency, handed him the remote. With a few clicks, Jamaal had his computer screen mirrored on the TV.

They’d set up the tip line after they’d posted videos of their raid of the vampire base in Maine. Since then, they’d added several videos on how to hunt vampires. Mostly, they received nothing but spam or hoaxes, but every once in a while, they’d get a good tip about a nest they could clean out. Or if it was out of their range, they could forward the information to one of their allies.

“We got this email in a couple days ago, but the filter screened it into the spam folder.” Jamaal hit a button and something appeared on the screen.

Luke rubbed his eyes. Still bleary-eyed, he had trouble seeing it. “Summarize it for me. I’m still not up to full speed yet.”

“It’s a confirmation email of a contract to move the contents of the vault to a new location,” Jamaal replied.

Roxi, waiting for the water to boil, sidled over to check out the TV. “When is the pickup date?”

“The day after tomorrow, first thing in the morning. Based on the number of trucks, it’s all going down at once.”

Luke licked his dry lips and ran a hand through his bed messy hair. “How do we know this is real? And who sent it?”

Jamaal shrugged. “We don’t know who sent it. Hersch tried chasing the IP address, but it was bounced around pretty good.”

“It seems to be too well informed to be a prank.
