Chapter Five

Georgio couldn’t believe his eyes. Never in a million years would he have imagined that he would see Tito of all people at the rebellion safe house. Yet there he stood, as cute as ever, right in the middle of a place that could very well get his perky little ass killed.

“What in the hell are you doing here?” Georgio demanded.

“I asked you first,” Tito pointed out.

“I think it’s pretty obvious. I’m not here to join the knitting club.”

“Well, that’s a bummer. I could have really used a new scarf for the winter. You know how cold it gets.”

Georgio wanted to shake some sense into Tito. It really wasn’t time for jokes. “Do you know what will happen if my brothers find you here?”

“Probably the same thing that will happen if they find you here, only it will be a lot worse for you. They’ll tear you to pieces before they kill you. So why are you taking the risk?”

Georgio ran a hand through his hair. This was the only safe place where he could say what he was thinking. “Because I’m sick of the violence. Seeing people die all the time just because they don’t have enough food to eat. I’m done with watching children beg on the street because their family doesn’t have anywhere to live. Meanwhile my brothers have everything they want and then some, just because they’re the best at killing. It’s unfair and needs to be changed.”

Tito stared at Georgio for a few moments as if he had grown another head or something before he finally said, “I feel the same way. The only reason I came to work for your brothers in the first place is because I was desperate for money. I hate them and everything they stand for. When I realized that you weren’t the same way they were, I was so happy.”

Georgio reached out and hooked an arm around Tito’s waist. Pulling him in close, Georgio placed a soft kiss on Tito’s head. How he wished he could keep Tito away from the danger. But if there was one thing he knew about Tito, it was how stubborn the man could be. If he was determined to be part of the resistance, there was no way that Georgio was going to talk him out of it.

“Just promise me you’ll be careful. You’ve come to mean a lot to me, and it would destroy me if something were to happen to you,” Georgio said.

“Back at ya,” Tito replied.

“We better go find a seat. The meeting is about to start.”

They went in and sat down next to Dirk. Tito studied Dirk a moment before he said, “Weren’t you the guy who was being beaten up by the twins that one day I came in with a delivery?”

Dirk gave Tito a crooked smile. “Thanks for the reminder, but yes, I was.”

A pink hue covered Tito’s face. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bring up any bad memories or anything.”

“That’s okay. I was just giving you a hard time.
