Stubborn
A soft knock at the door woke up Pete. The bed shook as Lisa stood up and got ready for chores. âPete, they tapped on the door. Itâs time for morning chores.â
âIâm not ready to get up, yet,â Pete said, and pulled the sheet over his head to keep morning light out of his eyes.
âI overheard Cephas tell Dory that you arenât pulling your weight,â Lisa whispered.
Pete sat up and threw the covers off. âThat does it; Iâm going to tell that guy off!â
Lisa motioned for her husband to calm down and whispered, âPlease, for our daughtersâ sake, donât say anything.â
Pete laid back on the bed and pulled the sheet back over his face. âI would have told him off already, but I like that old Jonas.â
Lisa didnât say anything. Pete heard her shut the door as she walked out. He could hear Dory mention his name and his wife quietly responded, âPete isnât feeling well this morning.â
He lay still, trying to fall back to sleep, but he couldnât. Instead, he listened to Lisaâs voice, yet couldnât make out her words. Doryâs voice alternated with Lisaâs for a long stretch of time. Pete imagined Lisa was telling Dory what a terrible husband he was and that Dory was trying to console her. Pete sat up and worked hard to hear what Lisa was saying.
âIâve not been a very good wife. I work in the childrenâs hospital as a nurse, and I know I get too involved in the lives of my patients. Instead of coming home and being a happy, supportive wife, I get down and stress about my little sick children and their families. Pete tries to talk about his company and financial issues, and I struggle to focus. After watching families battle against illness, disabilities, and even death, money just doesnât seem like that big of a deal. If I try to talk to Pete about what is going on at work, he just tells me, âYou need to be more professional. You canât let yourself get so involved with your patients and their families.â I know heâs right, but I canât help it.â
Their conversation ended, and kitchen sounds continued as the women prepared a large breakfast. Dory began singing a hymn, and after one verse, Lisaâs voice chimed in, singing along. Just as Pete finally dozed off, he heard Lisa open the door.
âAre you going to come out for breakfast?â she asked quietly.
He didnât answer, but sat on the edge of the bed and started getting dressed.
During breakfast, everyone talked cheerfully, except Pete and Cephas.
âWe had lots of fun riding ponies while you were on a picnic,â Natalie said enthusiastically.
âYou should have seen your daughter ride,â Ida told them. âOur old pony, Cob, goes out of his way to do whatever she asks of him.â
âHeâs the best pony ever!â Natalieâs face was glowing brighter than a lantern. âCob is so easy to ride, and he doesnât go over jumps.â
âIs that good, that he doesnât go over jumps?â Pete asked.
