The Communist leader in Szczuczyn called my father to his office to announce that by an edict from Moscow, he had been awarded the Orden Lenina (Order of Lenin), among the highest medals bestowed in the Soviet Union. Mama and I were proud of this recognition of Papa’s work. Papa did not choose to go to Moscow to collect it, however. We were not content to settle for life under Communism, and we were now eager to get away from the Soviets. At about the same time, Baruch Levin, the Jewish partisan who had escaped with us from the Lida ghetto, was decorated with the highest medal of bravery, Geroy Sovietskovo Soyuza (Hero of the Soviet Union). Levin had blown up eighteen German trains carrying soldiers and supplies to the eastern front, killing nearly 900.
