TROY CAME IN FROM THE COLD brushing ice off his clothes and inhaling the kitchen’s warm woodsmoke air. In the orphanage there was never any warmth. He must always keep the memory of the orphanage in his mind. So he never wondered why he was here. Never stopped thanking God. The God he didn’t believe in. The God who killed Ma.

Tara followed him shaking snow off her parka. “Must be ten below,” she said.

“Try twenty-two,” he admonished.

She stared at him, angry. “What fucking difference does it make?”

“Don’t say that word.”

“I can say what I want. Asshole.”

“When your mother’s dead a month –”

She raised fists to her face. “Don’t say that word.”

“Dead dead dead death death DEATH! We’re all gonna die, even little cheerleaders with pretty faces who think that’ll give them everlasting life.” Stunned, he ran upstairs and slammed his door, sat on the bed. He couldn’t stand it. That Ma was dead.

His fault. If he hadn’t come to live with them maybe Ma wouldn’t have had to drive to Orangeburg that day. Not at that moment.

He sneered at his face pale and expressionless in the mirror, his jaw aslant, a cowlick hanging down. You always wanted a family. Now look what you’ve done.
