Chapter Seven

Time seemed to stretch on his watch as the others slept, and Troy couldn’t help but think back to his old job, the one he had before working for Jack Chandler. It had been the position he’d sought for so long, and after losing it, he was still wrestling with its effect on his life.

The memories passed through him as he gazed into the flames.

It had been a hot summer’s day, and he was sweating under his suit as he put the car into park. Troy tugged at his button-down shirt, in annoyance. It was part of his standard uniform, but if he had his way, he would have ripped the damned thing off. But he was nothing if not but professional while on the job.

Troy was driving ‘the beast,’ or what some called Cadillac One. He watched the road, making sure to keep his eyes on the traffic. The roads had been cleared out for their arrival, and the other members of the Secret Service were in front and behind their car. The inside of the car was quiet, mostly due to the barriers of bulletproof glass, keeping them separated from the outside world.

The tinted window behind him lowered as the President of the United States looked at him in the rearview mirror. Troy focused on the mirror and gave a nod. “Are you ready, Mr. President?” He asked, his voice calm and steady.

“Yep. Let’s get this conference finished, so I can get back and sign this bill. Then when that’s done, we can get something to eat. ‘Cause I’ll tell you what, Troy – I’m hungrier than a pig at an all-you-can-eat buffet,” the President said with an amused smile. The white-haired man, who was called the leader of the free world, was in his second term. Although the stress weighed on him there was a tiredness at the edges of his expression, he was pleasant and jovial.

Despite his position, he still retained his down-to-earth sensibility and sense of humor. That and his personality, kindness, and determination had drawn voters to him, allowing him to easily win both elections.

“Don’t worry, sir. As soon as this is over with, we can get you home for dinner.”

“How about we stop over at a Wendy’s on the way home? Charlotte will be busy until later tonight. In fact, you can bring yours in when we get back, and we’ll sit down together. Get yourself something extra while you're at it,” he said with a light chuckle, handing Troy a cool fifty bucks through the window. Troy looked at it, shaking his head, and took the money.

Why couldn’t he DoorDash like anyone else?

Troy already knew why that wasn’t going to happen and shrugged. “Sure thing, sir. Let's just get you out of this meeting safely.”

This was an important meeting between two nations at war, and President Newman had been brought in to try and negotiate a ceasefire. Each side wanted America to take a side, but the President was determined to find a compromise without involving America’s military.
