Morse Telegraphic Machine

Cooke and Wheatstone, the competitors, were hard at work

While in Paris, I met Daguerre

He was working on a photographic machine

On my return to the USA, I introduced the idea

In doing so, I took some of the earliest pictures in America

In addition to being an artist, I had become a photographer

On my return to Washington, I pressed politicians to support telegraphy

I gave a demonstration to politicians of the Morse code system

Eventually, in 1842, US Congress awarded me 30,000 dollars

It was for an electric telegraph from Baltimore to Washington

On May 1st 1844, we passed a message part of the way to D.C.

By the 24th, the phrase “What hath God wrought?” crossed the wires

Indeed, it seemed like a holy miracle

Messages tapped out in secret code

Information, people realized, was power

In 1845, the Magnetic Telegraph Company was formed

It linked telegraph lines between Boston, Buffalo, New York and elsewhere
