Chapter Eleven

The Problem with Prisoners

We follow behind my parents and find them waiting at the door next to the cells. After a minute of silence, waiting for her to do something, Aria finally snaps, “Well Fayne, aren’t you going to check it for traps?” The elf jumps forward and examines the door, the cleric stepping aside. I wasn’t sure what had upset my mother so much, and by this point I wasn’t going to ask. While our scout checks the door a flicker of movement from the fountain room catches my eye. Fading back into the shadows I sneak after it.

A kobold, slowly creeping up on the party, is what I find. He gets closer and closer, everyone else watching Fayne as she works. I take out my sword, ready to strike if need be. Finally, When the kobold is ten feet away from Rurik, the dwarf turns around and sees the creeping creature. He draws his sword, sets it alight, and before the lizard has time to do more than squeak in surprise he has his sword at the kobold’s throat. It tries to jump backwards, but smacks right into me. Looking up at my face, the creature puts its hands in the air, dropping its spear, and surrenders.

Aria and Badger turn to see what is happening when they hear Rurik’s katana light up and after Fayne finishes checking the door, she turns back and sees the intruder as well

“Okay Rurik, you have a prisoner. Now what?” I prod.

He scowls at the scaly creature for a few seconds before barking out, “What were ya doin’?” in common.

At its bewildered expression I add, “Kobolds usually only speak Draconic.”

“Oh,” he grumbles, a bit embarrassed, repeating the question in Draconic.

“I sent to look!” it cries in fear. “There be bad noises from rat place so Tarka sent TikTik to look! Tarka want TikTik to see if goblins getting war group. Last time goblins got group were attacked by nasty rats, gave mighty kobolds time to set ambush for stupid goblins!”

“Well,” Aria dictates in Draconic. “He’s seen us, now he has to die.”

“What?” asks Fayne in Common, scandalized. “Why does he need to die!”

The aasimar, who is still speaking in draconic, raises an eyebrow, “He’ll go back to this Tarka and tell him-”

“Her,” corrects the Kobold, who realizes what it said and covers its mouth with its hands.

“Tell her and then they’ll set up an ambush for us,” Aria finishes, glaring at TikTik.

“Any reason you’re saying this in Draconic?” I ask her in Common.

“Not really,” Aria quite obviously lies, speaking so that the kobold doesn’t understand.

“Well,” says Rurik. “If we ‘ave to kill ‘im, we should give ‘im a merciful death. Maybe Fayne can go rearm that gas trap and we can kill ‘im with that.”

At his calm statement, we all stare at him in dumbfounded silence.

“So,” I say slowly, “your humane idea is to gas the kobold to death.”

“Aye!” answers Rurik.

“Since we’re going to do this, are there any gypsies you want to get rid of as well, maybe some Jews?” I ask sarcastically.
