CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Thirty minutes into the wolves’ deliberations, Allie, Elle, and Kat decided the tantalizing scents of sausage, bacon, eggs, and pancakes wafting into the upstairs gathering space were too much to resist. They made their way downstairs and found the ground-floor dining room of the Hair of the Dog was filled with patrons. The breakfast rush was in full swing.

They sat at a small round table in the corner, well away from the other diners. Elle was demolishing a plate of pancakes drenched in syrup while Kat inhaled cup after cup of strong coffee.

“What is taking so long?” Allie gripped her mug with both hands. The coffee inside had gone cold, and she made a face as she took a sip. “Ugh. I need a warmup.”

Elle paused between bites and gave her cousin a maternal look. “You’re wound too tightly, girl. You need to eat something and relax.”

Allie shook her head. “I can’t eat or relax until we know what the werewolves are going to do. If they don’t agree to help us, we’re screwed.”

“Patience.” Kat put her hand over Allie’s and gave it an affectionate pat. “If they were planning to refuse us, Freyja wouldn’t have assigned Quinn’s son to work with Tuck, Jazmin, Billy, and Gunnar on the murder investigation. I think that’s a good sign.”

“I hope you’re right.” Allie sighed and took another sip of coffee. This time she managed not to make a face, though her expression was still pensive.

Elle jumped in, eager to get her two cents’ worth in. “Here’s another thing. I think they’re beginning to understand the terrifying implications of the Ancestors’ warning that darkness is coming for all of us. If nothing else, it’s in everyone’s best interest to unify so the humans don’t exterminate us. If we’re divided, they’ll pick us off one by one.”

“That’s true.” Kat nodded, her expression thoughtful. “But it won’t be easy to break the seals on my magic. I have a feeling the price the wolves will exact for their alliance goes beyond letting one of their pack members do ride-alongs during our murder investigation. Things are about to get complicated beyond belief.”

Allie pursed her lips and gave Kat a puzzled look. “What if the coming darkness is an actual war? I mean, the Ancestors said, ‘Darkness is coming for all of us.’ Does that include mortals? What if they were talking about an actual physical battle between supernaturals and humans?”

“That’s a good question.” Kat stabbed at a sausage link on Allie’s plate with her fork, her expression troubled. She dunked one end of it into the maple syrup on the plate and took a bite. The sweet and savory flavors exploded in her mouth, and she closed her eyes for a moment, enjoying the taste. Sometimes, human comfort food really hit the spot. “Humans are a warring species at heart. The most powerful among them are, at any rate. And if my magic is still sealed away when the fighting begins, I’m not sure we can stop them.
