Chapter Thirteen

Darren

I hadn’t seen so many people crammed into the training area since I started as a kid. But here I stood, with four vampires and one civilian. Danny stood at my right, his arms held behind his back at attention. I could see him trying not to make eye contact with Parker. I suspected it would ruin his tough-guy stance.

“So, it’s obvious that at least some of you should be better fighters than you are,” I said, my voice echoing in the enclosed space. “Now, I’m not suggesting you learn to fight like a Hunter. Our tactics are meant to take out vampires quick and fast, giving them less chance to attack.” I gestured to the three teenage vampires. “You’re pretty evenly matched with any vamp we come across. So, you need to think smarter than them. We aren’t the only Hunters out there. You’re going to need to know what’s waiting for you.”

I pointed to Angel. “Come at me as fast as you can.”

“Um, what?”

“Just run at me as fast as you can.”

Danny did a quarter turn, giving me the evil eye. I won’t hurt any of his friends, but I needed to prove a point. The others stepped aside. Angel brushed her dark hair out of her face before running at me. I’d seen newly turned vampires move faster than her, so it was easy to sidestep and hold out an arm to hit her in the throat. Vampires don’t get winded the same way people do, but the sudden arrest of momentum was enough to give me an edge. I bent my arm around her neck and threw her to the ground, eliciting a series of yelps from the onlookers and my pinned opponent.

“You can do better than that.” I let her up. “What makes you need to put on that burst of super speed?”

“I don’t know. I don’t use it,” she glanced at Edith as she spoke.

“What would make you want to use it?”

Her brow furrowed as she was contemplating the question. I grabbed her sister and held a pen to the side of her jugular. Hope squirmed in my grasp, her teeth elongating into fangs. Angel blinked, and she tackled us both, wrestling her sister free from my grasp.

“Good.”

Her eyes were wild for a minute until the adrenaline died down and her brain computed that there was no real danger. She backed off, and I used my momentum to kick back onto my feet. “Whatever you need to think about to get those abilities moving, use it.” I looked at Parker and Edith, too. “All of you. You can move faster than even the most well-trained Hunter when you put your mind to it.”

“But what if we aren’t vampires?” Caden said with a wave of his hand.

I narrowed my gaze at him for a moment. The entire time he’d been here, he’d avoided training, claiming he was a pacifist or some bullshit excuse. Yet, now he stood here ready to learn. “You’re interested now?”

He gestured toward the others.
