Chapter Seventeen

Sloane

The knocking on the door seeped its way into my consciousness. Cocooned in the warmth of my blankets and the safety of Jonah’s arm draped over me. I wanted to ignore the pounding on my door.

“Who can get in the gate?” Jonah growled, the weight of his arm disappearing as he rolled onto his back.

“Lauren, Eden, and Adrian,” I groaned, rolling out of bed.

“Eden has a house key.”

“It’s Lauren,” I sighed, pulling on my robe. “We should have stayed at your place.”

“She’d have gone there next,” Jonah said, putting on pants. “I thought your secluded cabin would be more private than this.”

“Not with friends like ours.” I headed to the door before Lauren took a battering ram to it. But I found Camden on the other side of the door.

“I am so sorry about this,” he said. “But Lauren couldn’t get you on the phone.”

“Where is she?”

“She headed around back afraid something happened to you.”

“Did she see Jonah’s truck right there?” I nodded. “I’m perfectly safe.”

He grinned. “I tried to tell her, but, you know Lauren.”

Lauren stopped at the sight of Jonah on the couch with a blanket and pillow. I almost laughed.

“You made Jonah sleep on the couch?” Lauren cried. “What am I going to do with the two of you?”

“What was so important that you had to tell me now?” I asked, not wanting the conversation to be about last night with Jonah. Not even sure on how to define this, didn’t want to go over it with an audience. She’d finally lost her mind. I moved to the kitchen and retrieved the bag of coffee to brew a pot.

“You’ve been doxed,” she said.

“What?” I scooped coffee grounds into the machine.

“Some celebrity gossip blogger that goes by the name Smith Martinez posted a couple days ago that Julia Simmons had changed her name to Sloane Thompkins and is living in Hart Valley and that Jonah’s your boyfriend. Even has a picture taken of you and Jonah in his truck in the parking lot of Lou’s.”

I stopped adding water to the coffeemaker mid pour. Jonah was beside me and took the coffeepot from me.

“What else did it say?” I asked.

Lauren held up her phone. “It gets worse—”

“I should just read it myself, right?” I crossed the room to retrieve my phone. “It’s important to see what’s out there now.” The comforting aroma of brewing coffee wafted through the house. Powering on my phone, I took it to the couch.

As the website loaded, I gasped at the photo, unrolling down my phone. “They posted a newer blog about the Halloween Party last night.” And there at the top of
