After closing statements, Judge Spencer reconvened court. She looked out over the courtroom, sternly. Everyone in attendance waited with bated breath.

Olivia addressed the jury succinctly. “Ladies and gentlemen, have you reached a verdict?”

Alice stood, clearing her throat simultaneously. “Yes, we have reached a verdict.” She handed the fated piece of paper to Bailiff Jennings, who passed it over to Judge Spencer. I watched intently, looking for a reaction on her part, knowing there would be none.

Judge Spencer’s eyes rose from the paper. “Mr. Stendhal, please stand for the reading of the verdict.”

Mitch, Cliff and I stood, all at once.

Olivia addressed Alice. “Please state the decision of the jury in the matter of Stendhal vs. Stendhal,” she said.

“The jury has ruled…” Alice turned to look at Mitch. Then she looked at me. The simple fact she was looking at us meant victory was ours. It had to be.

Alice continued to speak. “In favor of the plaintiff, Ms. Maria Mendoza-Stendhal.”

For a split second, you could hear a pin drop. But then, Maria’s side of the courtroom erupted in cheers, shouts, and applause. The tension on our side was so palpable you could cut through it with a knife. I could feel eyes practically assaulting me. For the first time in my life, I had failed at something.
