Tristan

“Tristan, can we talk?”

Robbie walked toward me, looking upset. His face was pale and his eyes troubled. Goddammit, what had Amos done now?

“What’s up?”

“It’s private. Maybe we can talk in your car?”

I checked my watch. I had practice to get to, and I didn’t want to be late. If I were, then Coach might have us stay longer to discipline the team for my tardiness. It wasn’t fair to the guys who arrived on time.

“I have a few minutes before I have to go to practice.” I opened the door for him. “Get in.”

Once he was inside, I shut the door, then skirted around the car to the driver’s seat.

“Are you going somewhere?” I asked him. “Your brother’s?”

“Actually, I was heading to the library for a study date, but I saw you and thought maybe I could talk to you.”

“Is this about Amos? He hasn’t been pressuring you, has he?”

“No, no.” He shook his head, but his face flushed pink. I could see why Barry wanted to protect him so much. He was too young for Amos, too naïve, but they seemed to care for each other genuinely. “Amos has been wonderful.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“I’ve been avoiding him.”

“Why?”

“Because of Barry. He doesn’t approve of Amos.”

“He doesn’t?”

“No.” He frowned down at his hands in his lap. “He thinks I’m too naïve and that jocks like you and Amos are out of my league.” When I said nothing, he glanced up at me. “You agree with him, don’t you?”

“I don’t agree with him disapproving, but I can see where he’s coming from. I saw how you feared Amos that first night you found out he was your mate. We’re way more experienced than you, Robbie.”

“That’s because I didn’t know him, and I didn’t expect that to happen when we kissed. I was surprised.”

“All I’m saying is move slowly. There’s no rush.”

“Do you think it would help if Amos and I had dinner with Barry? Maybe he’ll see that Amos isn’t so bad after all.”

“Sure, but talk to Barry about it first. Don’t spring it on him.”

It was surprising that I’d learned so much about the man and his habits in just a week and a half of…of what? We hadn’t defined our relationship, and he’d made it clear he didn’t see a future for us, but I would give him time to see a relationship between us was inevitable.

“Okay, I will. Thanks, Tristan.” He threw his arms around me and hugged me. “I appreciate it. I couldn’t talk to anyone else about this.”

“No problem.” I patted his back. He slipped out of the car and ran up the steps leading to the library. I watched him go and sighed. If I was dating Barry, I would be “adopting” his little brother too. Thankfully, Robbie was sweet and likable.
