Chapter 22

Emily

I woke up and was immediately sad. This was my last day.

It sucked that the last few days were spent alone—but it was for the better. I was sad to leave. I was glad I had been alone the last couple of days. If I had spent the week with Alex, today would be so much worse. I would be crushed and devastated. Now, I was just a little bummed that it was over before it began.

I got out of bed and dragged myself to make a cup of coffee. I couldn’t quite shake the sadness. It was crazy that I felt this strongly for a man I didn’t really know. I wasn’t the kind of person that believed in love at first sight. I thought it was silly and reserved for those that believed in unicorns and fairies. It was a strong crush. It would fade. I would get home and things would settle.

He said he wanted to spend the day with me, but I wondered what that entailed. What did he have planned? Honestly, the guy was spoiling me. He had some pretty wild ideas. That was probably part of the problem. He was exciting and adventurous. He kept me guessing. It was the way I liked to live my life. That was why he appealed to me. I envisioned us waking up together and deciding to hop on a boat and go to Maui or Oahu or wherever.

I heard my phone chime. I expected it to be Abbie. I opened the message and found it was from Alex. Actually him. Not his concierge or Perrin. “Ready in one hour, go casual,” it said.

Excitement bubbled up. He was going to spend the day with me. I hoped that meant Sabrina was gone. I was about tired of that woman. I headed for the bathroom and took a quick shower. I dressed in shorts and a pretty blouse, and because it was Alex, I opted for my tennis shoes. He was probably going to take me on one of the hikes to the actual volcanoes.

I put on just enough makeup to keep from looking totally washed out in the videos I was likely to take. I heard what he said yesterday, and I did not want him to think I was anything like Sabrina. I didn’t mind going fresh-faced. I actually preferred it.

There was a knock on the door. Butterflies erupted in my belly. I shouldn’t be this excited to spend the day with him. I answered it and found him in a pair of loose jeans and a T-shirt. His hair was devoid of mousse, gel, or anything else. He looked devastatingly handsome. “Hi,” I said slightly out of breath.

He leaned forward and kissed me. “Hi.”

“Am I dressed appropriately? Should I wear jeans?”

He shook his head. “You’re perfect as you are.”

“Thank you,” I said.

“Do you feel brave enough to take a ride in the Jeep again?” he asked.

I laughed. “Let me check the weather.”

“It’s a gorgeous day.”

“Then I guess I’m game,” I said.
