From the Massachusetts Line to the Main Line, and Beyond

FROM Newburyport on to Portsmouth -- which, as every school boy ought to know, is the chief seaport of New Hampshire--is 20 miles. In this stretch there is another succession of shore resorts. Plum Island close to the mouth of the Merrimac is a favorite rendezvous for cottagers. Salisbury Beach is another. From here north along the New Hampshire stretch of the North Shore come Hampton Beach and Rye and Little Boar's Head; each with its own clientele of devoted folk who annually return, bringing new recruits with them each year. Portsmouth is another Salem and this time hardly in lesser measure. If you would really know this old seaport town before ever you come to her, do not fail to read Thomas Bailey Aldrich's irresistible The Story of a Bad Boy. It is the real epic of a town whose chief joy is in its fine church spires and in the exquisite colonial doorways of its old houses and which takes its great Navy Yard and huge summer hotel as mere matters of ordinary course. A new town, almost anywhere, may have Navy Yards and fine great hotels, but only an old New England seaport city may have such houses as Portsmouth possesses in the ancient homes of the Warners, and the Wentworths, the Wendells, the Langdons and the Moffats. There is little water traffic up to the ancient wharves of Portsmouth these days, but the town wants nothing of that, whatsoever. It has its memories, all laid away in the lavender of its tradition--and no modern age of commonplace materialism ever can rob it of these.
