Chapter 19

Dove

It takes a little coaxing, but Ezryk finally lets me go, finishes drying me off, and pulls me over to the fire after I’m clothed again. He tugs me down to seat myself in his lap facing the fire, his broad chest at my back like a breathing chair-back with a heartbeat. He feeds me, offering some of our fresh produce from our foraging basket, holding things up in front of me and stating their name in his native tongue. I repeat the words as best I can but can tell from the odd chuckle that I’m not pronouncing them correctly sometimes. When we get to the green seed pods covered in fuzzy fur, Ezryk starts talking - explaining something to me and only being able to substitute the odd word with the English ones he’s learned. I catch ‘eat’, ‘good’ and ‘fire’, but everything else goes way over my head. Knowing this, Ezryk decides to stop explaining, and start showing me.

Wrapping his strong forearm around my waist, Ez holds me close as he leans forward toward the fire in front of us, causing me to lean with him. He throws one of the little green fuzzy pods into the flames and I watch as the spiky fur melts away where the pod rests on a glowing piece of wood. Ezryk pulls a bowl of water closer to us and then grabs the stick he’d been using to stoke the flames. He uses the stick to move the pod, making it fall from the log to the ash below, the seed still burning. He rolls it, and he rolls it until all the outside fuzz has burnt away. Then, quick as a flash, Ezryk drops the stick in favor of dipping his hand in the water before pinching at the hot seed pod and dropping it in the bowl of water making the thing hiss. How he didn’t burn himself I don’t know, but he seems utterly unfazed as he brings the bowl in front of us both, swirling it slowly while the seedpod cools. “Chazylyk,” he rumbles in my ear, which I’ve come to learn means ‘look’, or ‘watch’. I do as I’m told and watch as the now charred seedpod turns the water black. Ezryk places the bowl in my lap and dips his hand in, fishing out the now cooled pod. Rubbing the last of the charcoal black from the shell, I see that it’s no longer green, but bright neon pink.

I gasp. “Is that-?”

Ez chuckles, the deep sound of it warming my back. He takes the pink seedpod in his hand and crushes it in his fist, revealing the little nut-like things that I know taste like chocolate truffles. I go to take one but Ez closes his hand and jerks it away from me. “Hey! Ezzy!” I whine, trying to prize open his massive fist with both my hands. Batting me away, he opens up again and plucks a chocolatey nut between two fingers, and then leans close so that he can watch himself offer it up to my mouth.
