Renasta, ICS Fortitude, Unnamed Beach

In the time it had taken Adina to wake, Bon Noh had brought his ship to the planet and landed close to Fortitude. He strolled across the sand with three of his crew. One started coughing right away and returned to the Joshua. The others continued. Bon Noh covered his mouth with a corner of his shirt.

His scientists had examined the sample that Adina had nearly lost her life to deliver.

True to his word and his convictions, he had given the go-ahead on terraforming the planet and brought the terraformer with him. To the surprise of everyone, he’d also vowed to help the Enkelites get settled and oversee the project to its completion instead of “fucking off,” as Tc’aarlat had put it.

“Ah, Adina!” He beamed at her with his arms wide when he saw the women approaching. “I’m so happy to see you up and back in your old form.”

“You’re not the only one,” Adina said, still eating the last of her bistok sandwich, savoring the taste of it. Hunger was a seemingly perpetual side effect of her adventure.

“How are you feeling?” Jack asked.

“I’m fine.” Adina took a few breaths through her mask, the same one everyone else was wearing, it was far easier than trying to inhale Renasta’s air.

“I was just telling your captain that I’ve pledged my full support to the mission,” Bon Noh said. “We’ll even help oversee things.”

“When all is said and done, more is said than done. Bon Noh, the stalker and talker. Yes, a stalker. That is you.”

“Ever the joker, Tc’aarlat.” Bon Noh laughed. “That’s why you’re my favorite.”

Tc’aarlat and Jack heaved the machine forward another few meters and brushed off their hands. “When you want a job done right… Are we done here or what?”

“Just one more thing.” Zorxia moved to the machine and pushed one of the many buttons. The machine extended several arms, and a second later, they firmly planted themselves into the ground. “There, now it’s ready to terraform a planet. I can activate it from the atmosphere, which is the safest. You don’t want your ships subjected to the rapid changes made to the atmosphere or destroyed by the amount of energy this device unleashes as it pulls power from the Etheric to create a cascade effect that spreads around the planet in a very short amount of time.”

“If I’m standing on the planet when it’s being terraformed,” Tc’aarlat asked, “will I age?”

“No, you’ll be killed instantly.”

“Ah, okay. I thought so.” Tc’aarlat shrugged and turned to the Fortitude.

“This process should take about a week, right?” Jack asked. “Then we’re good to land people on the world.”

“If all goes according to plan, yes. We should have a beautiful green world by this time next week,” Zorxia said.

“Is it safe, being out in the open like this?” Adina wondered. “I mean, what if Benjamin is still on the loose?”

“Then he’ll be killed,” Zorxia replied. “The machine is currently tunneling to the planet’s core to establish a vent to bring the planet to a consistent temperature optimal for growth.
