No response came.
âUgh!â I said, and stomped my foot. âYou had to push us through a portal!â
âThe portal goes back,â said Long. âEvery portal out of the Brass City has a return portal. Thatâs what that is.â Long pointed to the coral arch with the brass-colored portal inside. âI was hoping we could go to some place with ice powers or something, because you talked about defeating this Ice Queen lady, and so I pictured some place with snow, which is how portals are supposed to work.
âOkay.â
âAnd I thought the snow would cool everyone off and then we could either find something to help fight fire with fire, or ice with ice in this case, and if we didnât we could go back to the Brass City and try and different portal.â
âOkay!â
Long bit her tongue. âAnd maybe we could have made snow cones.â She brushed a claw across the sand. âEveryone likes snow cones.â
I sighed. âWe still have one chance to follow him. Don, your necklace,â I said.
Don looked up, struggling to lift his chin.
âYour necklace,â I said, and pulled the green emerald out from under his sweat-covered shirt. It glowed and tugged in all directions like a titled compass.
âIt seems there are too many creatures in peril,â Don said. âIncluding us.â
I stomped my foot, looked back at the jungle, and shouted, âFine, Hanno! Keep it! Keep it! As long as Enkidu doesnât have the horn, thatâs fine! But if you show yourself in Wonderland, Iâm going to have Snow White put you in a glass coffin where only a dwarfâs kiss will wake you up!â
âThat is an interesting curse,â Don said.
âWasnât my idea. Okay, Long. Letâs go back.â
âWhat? But that traitor not only has the horn, he has your sword!â
âI know. And maybe Iâll come back for it one day. But we went to the Brass City to get the horn out of the Ice Queenâs hands. Weâve done that.â
âSo long as Hanno doesnât join with the Ice Queen.â
I nodded. âI donât know if heâll be able to find his way back to this portal, though. You saw how the forest regrew. If Hannoâs lost, then so is the horn. And that means the Ice Queen canât get it. Weâve done what we set out to do, and weâre running out of time. We promised Snow White weâd be back in three days. So we go back to the Brass City and use one of those portals to go to the place Long was talking about. You said there was a place with snow?â
âOh yes! Iâve heard traders and travelers talk about it. You live in the Brass City long enough you hear things,â said Long. âOf course, I was never brave enough to go through the portals, but I heard there was one that led to a place where a magical being lived who could control the cold.â
I nodded. âThatâs where weâll go then. We wonât have the horn, but neither will Enkidu.â
âAnd the sword? Will we have the strength to overcome the Ice Queen without it?â Don asked.
