No response came.

“Ugh!” I said, and stomped my foot. “You had to push us through a portal!”

“The portal goes back,” said Long. “Every portal out of the Brass City has a return portal. That’s what that is.” Long pointed to the coral arch with the brass-colored portal inside. “I was hoping we could go to some place with ice powers or something, because you talked about defeating this Ice Queen lady, and so I pictured some place with snow, which is how portals are supposed to work.

“Okay.”

“And I thought the snow would cool everyone off and then we could either find something to help fight fire with fire, or ice with ice in this case, and if we didn’t we could go back to the Brass City and try and different portal.”

“Okay!”

Long bit her tongue. “And maybe we could have made snow cones.” She brushed a claw across the sand. “Everyone likes snow cones.”

I sighed. “We still have one chance to follow him. Don, your necklace,” I said.

Don looked up, struggling to lift his chin.

“Your necklace,” I said, and pulled the green emerald out from under his sweat-covered shirt. It glowed and tugged in all directions like a titled compass.

“It seems there are too many creatures in peril,” Don said. “Including us.”

I stomped my foot, looked back at the jungle, and shouted, “Fine, Hanno! Keep it! Keep it! As long as Enkidu doesn’t have the horn, that’s fine! But if you show yourself in Wonderland, I’m going to have Snow White put you in a glass coffin where only a dwarf’s kiss will wake you up!”

“That is an interesting curse,” Don said.

“Wasn’t my idea. Okay, Long. Let’s go back.”

“What? But that traitor not only has the horn, he has your sword!”

“I know. And maybe I’ll come back for it one day. But we went to the Brass City to get the horn out of the Ice Queen’s hands. We’ve done that.”

“So long as Hanno doesn’t join with the Ice Queen.”

I nodded. “I don’t know if he’ll be able to find his way back to this portal, though. You saw how the forest regrew. If Hanno’s lost, then so is the horn. And that means the Ice Queen can’t get it. We’ve done what we set out to do, and we’re running out of time. We promised Snow White we’d be back in three days. So we go back to the Brass City and use one of those portals to go to the place Long was talking about. You said there was a place with snow?”

“Oh yes! I’ve heard traders and travelers talk about it. You live in the Brass City long enough you hear things,” said Long. “Of course, I was never brave enough to go through the portals, but I heard there was one that led to a place where a magical being lived who could control the cold.”

I nodded. “That’s where we’ll go then. We won’t have the horn, but neither will Enkidu.”

“And the sword? Will we have the strength to overcome the Ice Queen without it?” Don asked.
