Chapter Eight

For three days they stayed in the little hideaway waiting for Noah’s friend to return. Although it was mean-spirited, Alex was glad she had Noah to herself. She was starting to love this man.

They explored the area and hunted, and she was surprised at the abundance of wildlife available to them. Noah was a crack shot who expressed surprise at her expertise.

“I’ve never known a gal who can shoot so well.”

“You should meet my sister, Freddie, she used to ride shotgun with Billy. Pa always said she was good enough to be an army sharp-shooter.

Noah sat with his back against a tree staring at Alex. What a beautiful gal she was. He had dreamed of finding someone like her, but never thought he would. She wore her chestnut hair loose and it floated around her shoulders. Her eyes were hazel, although they sometimes changed to a pale green. He wanted her so bad it was killing him, and he feared he wouldn’t be able to control his urges for much longer. If only Dan would hurry up and get back.

“I caught one. I caught one.” Alex yelled, jumping up and down.

“Pull it in, or you’ll lose it,” he shouted.

“I can’t, I’m too nervous. It might jump off the hook.”

Laughing, he leapt to his feet and strode over to the creek to help her bring in a nice sized fish.

“We can have it for lunch.” She danced around. “My very first fish.”

He couldn’t believe she had never been fishing before. It was the only decent thing his Pa did for him and Pete – teach them to fish. He re-baited the hook. “One will hardly be enough, see if you can catch us another one.”

“I like it here, Noah. I think I could live here.”

“Stop talking or you’ll frighten the fish away.”

It was mid-morning on the third day since they arrived here. He couldn’t remember when he’d last enjoyed himself so much, probably never. His happiness was tempered with frustration. It was becoming harder to control his need for Alex. Each night she had slept cuddled up in his arms and he’d enjoyed it; wanted more than the few kisses they had exchanged.

He only had to ask her, or increase the pressure of his mouth and she would be his. He couldn’t do it to her. Bad enough breaking her heart if things went bad in Austin. It would be criminal to risk giving her a child. What would become of her then?

He would ride into Austin tomorrow and hand himself in to the Texas Rangers, confess to anything they wanted if they would leave Alex alone. She was young and could make her way home, and in time forget him. Find herself another man. The last thought was as painful as being gut shot.

He would leave at daybreak. Dan would be here tomorrow or the next day. He recalled him once saying it was a four or five day round trip to get his supplies. Worst scenario, if for some reason he didn’t make it back here, Alex was resourceful enough to find her way out.
