Six long, sweaty, thoroughly enjoyable hours later…

Daniel woke with the feeling he was being watched. It didn't take long to notice the woman sitting in the chair he himself had sat in only a few hours ago. He should have been leaping out of bed and challenging the intruder who'd somehow found her way into his home.

But strangely, he felt no threat from this woman, despite the fact that his werewolf nose told him she wasn't human. He raised an eyebrow and waited for her to speak.

"He's kind of scrawny," she said in a conversational tone.

Daniel sucked air through his teeth and gave her an annoyed look. Miles was lean and fit and perfectly muscled in all the right places.

"Fine, he's perfect. He's one hundred percent grade-A beefcake. Congratulations of your mating."

"Who are you?"

She narrowed her eyes as if he should have known. "Anaedra," she said watching him closely, making an annoyed sound when Daniel apparently didn't show proper recognition of her name.

"Well, Anaedra, what do you want?" he asked, sitting up and very carefully putting his body between his intruder and his sleeping, exhausted mate. He dragged on a pair of shorts as he stood up, indicating with his chin that the woman should precede him from the room. Thankfully she took the hint and wandered into the kitchen, just about as far away from Miles as they could get without actually leaving the apartment.

"You don't recognize me, do you?" the woman asked, narrowing her eyes again as if the very idea offended her.

"Should I?" Daniel asked, not bothering to hide his irritation. Somehow he couldn't find it in him to be frightened of this woman.

"Humans are strange." That didn't answer his question. "You were fatally injured. You didn't even know at the time that Goldie could save you. Why would you do it?"

"Do what?"

"Give up your life to protect a woman you didn't even know."

Daniel wasn't certain, but he maybe recognized her as one of the women he'd been protecting that day he'd been fatally shot. He hadn't even given it a second thought. When the guy he'd been investigating had pulled a gun and reached for a hostage, Daniel had reacted on instinct, stepping between the man and his target. The gun had gone off, but Daniel's training had helped him to stay in control long enough to take the man down with him, knocking him unconscious before they'd both hit the ground.

"Why?" the woman asked again, making a low growly sound when he shrugged but didn't answer verbally. "Humans are selfish, self-involved, dangerous beings. Why would you—human at the time—protect a woman you didn't even know?"

Daniel took offense to her slighting the entire human race, despite no longer being one of them.

"Because most humans are decent people who care for everyone around them, even the ones they don't know." Daniel shook his head in exasperation. "How can you judge so harshly seven billion people you've never even met?"

The woman actually looked thoughtful for a moment, and then gave him a nasty grin.
