After the creation of CSXT, locomotives from the component railroads were renumbered. Most were not immediately repainted into CSXT colors but received a patch treatment, which is shown on former Western Maryland Railway No. 3798, an EMD GP40 now numbered CSXT No. 6573. The CSXT “blue stripes” livery first appeared in August 1986; the livery’s name came from the blue stripe above the locomotive walkway. CSXT EMD GP40 No. 6653 (former B&O No. 3778) is pictured between assignments at Akron Junction in October 1989. CSXT stopped painting locomotives in the “blue stripes” livery a year after it debuted, but not before it was applied to 178 engines. (Photograph by Richard Antibus.)
