4.1 Nourish your spirit

Taking time to nourish your spirit is a worthwhile endeavor that can add purpose and meaning to your everyday life. Some people find their spiritual practice provides clarity and enhances their ability to be at peace with themselves and others. Some people feel uplifted and joyful, creating a sense of optimism and a release of stress. Others feel more grounded in the present; able to concentrate, and act with kindness and compassion rather than reacting impulsively to life’s challenges. Some people feel strengthened by belonging to a spiritual community, while others find comfort by drawing deeper into themselves or by connecting to nature.

People nourish their spirit in a variety of ways. Do what works for you. Many seniors are already aware of how and where they like to express their spirituality, but over time there may be barriers to accessing a place of worship. This can lead not only to spiritual loss, but also to social isolation and mental decline. If you are currently part of a religious community, use the resources it offers to assist you in getting to services or maintaining regular spiritual practice. Regardless of how you express your spirituality, ensure that you are able to get to the activities or places that are “good for your soul.” Ask for the help you require.

If you have not developed a spiritual dimension and are interested in the benefits a spiritual practice can provide, consult with your innermost circle. They may help you define what brings you joy and purpose. Spirituality is a popular topic these days, and there is much literature online or in your local library or bookstore. Look at the titles that interest you and discuss the material with others to find what appeals to you and how you can access groups with similar philosophies.

To promote your own sense of purpose you may consider volunteering. Giving back does more than simply help others. It can build your self-esteem by putting years of your unique experience to practice. Choose a volunteer opportunity that will be fun and meaningful to you. Many organizations are happy to accommodate your time availability and energy level. Take the time to find the right fit for your interests and passions. Volunteering can build your self-esteem, make you feel valued in society, and improve your own health and wellness.
