A message of farewell. A message of hope. A message of sickness and death.

And before even that—

I gasp and find myself suddenly in the real world, my bruised jaw throbbing all over again.

And find myself looking into Susan’s angry eyes.

I lick my lips. “Uh . . .”

She stands up quickly and I half expect her to strike out at me.

But she doesn’t. She just stares down at me with cold eyes of betrayal.

Sighing, I push myself into a standing position. “Look, Susan, I’m sorry—”

She holds up a hand to silence me. “You will not take Liam. You will not take him and I will take that as your token of loyalty even if you do refuse to run away with me.”

“Susan, I—”

“That is what you must do.”

Gritting my teeth, I touch her hand. And she disappears.

Rhyan lifts one hand lamely. “Bye.”

I stare where she’d just been standing for a long moment before sitting up and rubbing my head. “Well, let the best man win, then.”

Allen pokes his head out of the car just then, gauze on his bruised and bloodied eyes. “Was there someone else out here?”
