Chapter 11
Angelo rummaged through his dresser and beneath his bed for an object he doubted he would find because he thought the whole thing was a lie. But it was just possible Jeff had lost his grandfather's pocketknife that meant "so so so much" to him when he was last over for that long, hard fuck that Angelo could now only look at in retrospect as a good-bye. He'd just have to find the damn thing and make the good-bye stick. Practical y panting with effort, he was shocked when he actual y did discover the knife under the bed. And then he wondered if Jeff planted it. He could imagine no other way it could be so perfectly perched inside a shoe beneath the bed on Angelo's side. He jumped up as he heard the house phone ring, knowing it was Jeff on the intercom from downstairs, waiting to be let in. He bolted to get it before Nick did. This was going to be tense at best.
Nick was sitting on the sofa, doing something that looked like making newspaper origami when Angelo dashed for the ringing phone. "You're going to break something," he observed dryly, but didn't stop doing whatever it was he was doing.
Angelo grabbed the phone and fought back the wince at Nick's cocksureness.
He was likely to make this encounter especial y memorable—in a hel ish sort of way—
when al Angelo wanted was to avoid a scene. Angelo had nothing against Jeff. He was a nice lug of a guy. Not much for brains, but then, that's not what he'd been after at the time. Most of his Hulks didn't want any more than he did out of their little trysts, so he wondered why Jeff did. Angelo loathed complications, and Nick's posture and the ridiculous little humming he was doing showed he was reveling in thoughts of whatever plan he had in mind.
"Hey, Jeff," Angelo said into the phone, "come on up." He hoped his voice sounded casual and noncommittal, or at least not as anxious as he felt.
"On my way, hotstuff," Jeff answered. Angelo winced, now picturing him bounding up the stairs, in anticipation of a reunion that wasn't going to make him happy in the least. He turned to Nick and pointed a warning finger. "Be good."
Nick dropped his newspaper and lifted his hands like paws and stuck his tongue out like a faithful dog. Angelo groaned. "You know," Nick said casual y, "I may be enjoying the opportunity to meet the last Hulk you're ever gonna screw, but I'm not gonna let him upset you."
Jeff knocked. Angelo took note of the way Nick was deliberately slouched on the couch. He couldn't be seen from the door, but he was obviously listening and ready to break up any funny business.
"I'm sorry," Angelo muttered over his shoulder as he went to let Jeff in. But he wasn't sure what was he sorry for. It wasn't for fucking Jeff before Nick was back in his life.
