Oh God, oh God, oh God.
Why had she asked him that? And why did his answer throw her poor brain into chaos?
Well, she knew part of the reason. Because just the touch of her arm had sent jolts of excitement through her and sheâd wanted to kiss him too. It was only a small sound from Sinbad that had made her come to her senses.
Of course, his removing his hand from her arm had helped her fight the urge as well. While heâd been touching her, Natalie hadnât really been able to think clearly. Her mind had been too full of the uproar that simple touch had caused in her. Good Lord! Having his fingers touch the skin of her arm had been more arousing than some past boyfriends had managed with full make-out sessions or more. How was that even possible? Obviously, they had some serious chemistry.
But heâd called himself âbad Valerianâ for that, and even admitted it to her. What was she supposed to take away from that? That mentally he really didnât want to kiss her and it was just a physical urge? Or that he wasnât interested in a relationship and thought it would be bad to start something up with a single mother? Maybe it was a work thing, she thought hopefully. Maybe Valerian didnât feel he should start something while he was supposed to be providing protection.
None of the options were good ones, but the last option was the least hurtful possibility. She could understand and even appreciate his professionalism if he didnât want to start anything while on the job. However, that just gave her hope, which was a bad thing. Natalie didnât want to hope that they could have something after all of this Angel-Maker business was cleared up. Because she didnât think it would work out, and she wasnât interested in being hurt again. But damn . . . with the chemistry so strong that just a generic touch on the arm had her hot and bothered, it might be worth the pain at the end to enjoy the pleasure it suggested they could experience in the short term.
Yeah, even Natalie knew that was messed up. Sheâd suffered enough emotional damage thanks to Devin and really didnât want to go through that again. Of course, no relationship was a given and there was always the risk of pain, but in her mind between Valerianâs age and her responsibilities she just couldnât see it working. She was better to try dating someone her own age who could handle her responsibilities . . . and probably too she should wait until she had done the addition and actually had time to spend with someone to build a relationship.
Sighing inwardly, as she acknowledged that despite her attraction to the man Valerian just wasnât right for her, Natalie tried to think of something to say to end the awkward silence that had fallen over them since heâd admitted he wanted to kiss her.
âWho is Tybo?â she finally asked.
