Chapter nine

T he alarm on my phone went off, shattering my dreams. I had been dreaming about sex. No actual surprise there. I looked down and saw some pretty good morning wood. I chuckled to myself. After closing my eyes for what seemed like a second, the second alarm sounded. I sighed, sat up, and swung my legs out of bed. This was the first time in about four months that I had used an alarm to wake up. Today was already different.

Pulling on yesterday's sweatpants and t-shirt, I finished dressing quickly. After stepping into my shoes, I looked at the worn-out pair of slip-ons, wishing that I could wear a better pair with more tread or at least more insulation. It was still freezing outside. Unfortunately, anything like that had laces and that would not work for another couple of weeks, when I finally got the use of my right arm back. I shook my head. The important thing was to get up and start moving. So, I quietly slipped downstairs. Everything was quiet, just the faint whir of the refrigerator. I had even beaten the auto-start of the coffeepot. Smiling at my industriousness, I pulled on my hat and coat and gingerly opened the door. I was surprised at the creak, even though I knew that it always did it. I'm not sure why I noticed it this morning.

The cold air hit me like a sledgehammer. It hurt to breathe. Why was I doing this? Oh yeah, because I was so out of shape, I got out of breath, getting a glass of water. I fished my wireless headphones out of my pocket, praying they were still charged enough for this first walk. I turned them on, paired them with my phone, and started my workout playlist. Loud three chord guitar riffs screaming through the earbuds made me turn down the volume immediately. Volume in check, I picked a direction and started walking. It was that time in the winter where it hadn't snowed recently but it was still freezing. The remnants of the snow and ice on the sidewalk were retreating toward the grass that was still buried in snow. It crunched and cracked as I walked over the thin ice and crystalized snow. I started walking up the sidewalk past Jessica's house. I was on the opposite side of the street, craning my neck, looking for signs of her in the windows. There were no lights on. I don't think I even knew what time she left for work in the morning, when she had to leave for work. She mostly worked from home. Her silver SUV sat waiting for her in the driveway. The windows had a light ice coating on them.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. There were two text messages, the first from my mom.

'Where are you? Where did you go? Are you ok?'

I stopped to text back. 'I'm fine. Going for a walk. Don't worry.'

The next text message was from Jess.

'Is that you out there this early? NVMD, of course, it's you.
