The walk there was so long it was practically endless, and Ethan did nothing but complain all the way, chewing her ear off with dumb questions about how safe the area was and why they were walking. For a moment, Sara was even tempted to take him down the road where the cemetery was, but she thought the better of it, because her ears would certainly end up paying for it. If he ever decided to abandon his profligate lifestyle, he could always be a lawyer. He had an extraordinary talent for complaining that was really beginning to get on her nerves.

“Why didn’t you go out with your usual bunch of friends?” she asked him, feeling suddenly exasperated. They got to the end of Eighteenth Avenue, emerging onto Fifty-second in Brooklyn.

“Because I keep telling you that my driver’s away,” he replied as he looked around. In that area the streets were wide, deserted and rather grim.

“We could always get a taxi…” she pointed out.

“What, and trust the taxis around Bensonhurst? You’re crazier than I am! Out here in the sticks, even the spiders are abnormally big…” he replied theatrically. “Big and disgusting!”

Sara decided that maybe his talents would be wasted as a lawyer. All thing considered, acting would probably be a better fit.

“While your part of the city is just packed to bursting with excellent specimens of the human race,” she said sarcastically, laughing. “Drunken trust-fund babies and…”

He didn’t seem to have taken offense. In fact, he hardly ever did. “I would like to point out that I am dying of thirst in this desolate place! Do you have any idea how horrible being sober is?” he asked, stopping in the middle of the street in outraged protest .

“Sober since this afternoon?” asked Sara, without batting an eyelid.

He had been a little less ‘out of it’ than usual, since he had moved into her house, but she still had to figure out if that was actually a good thing or a bad thing – judgment was still pending.

“Since days ago!” he exclaimed angrily.

“Of course, Ethan. The rules…” she said, without giving him any satisfaction.

“You’re a sadist, woman. Has anybody ever told you that before?”

“Depending on the day, my sister might possibly be in agreement with you.”

“You should be jumping up and down with joy, praising me for my incredible willpower or something!” he cried.

Sara looked at him, raising her eyebrows. “You are completely out of your mind,” she said as she crossed the street. It was far better to ignore the things he came out with.

“Hey, I’m really struggling to survive in this damn neighborhood!”

At that point Sara turned to him with a triumphant smile on her face. “This neighborhood really isn’t for you. You should head off back to where you came from… ”

“I’m redecorating,” he reminded her, a rather funny expression on his face. “You know I don’t have anywhere else to go….”

“You have a family, don’t you? Go and stay with your brother.”

“God, I’d rather stay with you for the rest of my life,” he said very seriously.
