Chapter Six

Liam wiped away the last smudge of putty on the pane and stood back to inspect the window. “Looks good.” He glanced over at Craig, who was putting away his tools. “Thanks, man, for the help. I really wanted to make sure Joey had natural light before another day went by.”

“Sure thing. I’m happy to help, except,” he added squinting at the window. “It needs curtains maybe.”

“What the fuck for?”

“For one thing, it will dress up the room a little.” When Liam snorted at that observation, his friend continue. “For another, it’s east-facing so that means sunlight will stream in and hit you both square in the eyes when you wake up.”

Liam followed the line of sight and grunted. “Okay, that’s an easy fix.” Grabbing the pallet from where they’d shoved it into a corner, he laid it out in an angle that would avoid direct sunlight. “There, problem solved.”

Craig shook his head. “That’s not where he had it before.”

“So what? He didn’t put it in this room to begin with.”

“That’s right,” Craig agreed, slinging his tool bag over his shoulder. “Mabel did, and she set it up to maximize space and make it look homey.”

Liam shoved his hands in his back pockets and stared at the other gamma. “And, now it doesn’t?”

“Fuck if I know. I’m not a female.”

“Neither is Joey.”

“Yeah, but he’s an omega, and you know they’re more sensitive.” He scratched the back of his neck. “At least, I think they are.”

“Okay, maybe he is, except now I’m in charge of him, and if I think this is better, than that’s the way it’s going to be.” Even as he said the words, he wasn’t so sure about that. Joey had been pretty steamed about the window.

His friend gave him what could only be described as a pitying look. “You’re going to find that whole I’m-in-charge thing doesn’t work quite the way you envision.”

Liam narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean?”

“I mean that pack hierarchy works better in the macro than the micro. I can get all gamma on Mabel and take charge because I think it’s best for her and the pups. And, for the most part, she’s fine with that. She’s a sigma, right? So, she’s happy to take orders, except that sometimes I go too far. I make decisions without consulting with her as if her view doesn’t matter. That’s when things go south fast. She won’t tolerate being treated like a pup or an idiot.”

“She gets mad?” Liam found that hard to believe. Mabel was such a sweet, docile shifter.

Craig cocked his head. “More like disappointed and hurt. Those are way worse than mad. I feel like a complete shit, and that’s when the groveling starts.”

Liam barked out a laugh. “Groveling?”

“Down-on-my-knees groveling.”

Liam shook his head and laughed some more. “I can’t imagine that. You’re a gamma.”

“A gamma who loves his mate. I don’t like hurting Mabel’s feelings. And, just because I was born to be an aggressive fighter, doesn’t mean I can’t rein in my nature and talk things through with her.
