Max had just pulled up to the curb at the end of the street near their hotel in downtown Bend when a text came through his screen on his dash.
He was about to answer, when he saw Deputy Spencer come out the front door of their hotel and climb into his sheriffâs department rig out front.
âWhat do you suppose the deputy wants?â Robin asked.
âNo idea,â Max said. âLetâs find out.â
They waited for the deputy to drive away before they got out and headed to the hotel. Along the way, Max texted Sage saying theyâd be there shortly.
Max and Robin went into his room to meet up with Sage.
Instead of an ass-chewing, Sage gave Max a hug and a quick kiss on the lips. Then she punched him in the arm and said, âYou should have called.â
âMy SAT phone needs a charge,â Max said. âAnd where we went there were zero cell phone bars.â
Sage ran her finders through her silky black hair and then said, âTell me you found her.â
Robin took this with a smile. âWe did. We stayed with her last night and told her to stay put until we figure out whatâs going on.â
âDeputy Dog just left,â Sage said.
âWe saw that,â Max said. âWhat did he want?â
Sage told them what the deputy had conveyed to her about the body found in the high desert.
âAmberâs attacker,â Max surmised.
âThatâs my guess,â Sage agreed. âWhat was Amberâs story?â
âJust as we suspected,â Robin interjected. âAttempted kidnapping.â Then she explained what Amber had told them the night before, along with the theory of the strange activity of the judge.
âYou think they have a rogue judge?â Sage asked, shaking her head. âThat can be damn near impossible to prove.â
Max smiled and turned to his twin sister. âIt sounds like we could use a lawyer to review the rulings of the judge.â
âYou asshole,â Robin said. Then she pulled a tiny thumb drive from her pocket and smiled.
âWhatâs that?â Max asked.
âAmber slipped it to me last night,â Robin said. âItâs all the evidence she downloaded from the county system.â
âI hope she encrypted the drive,â he said.
âI have the password,â Robin said.
âExcellent. You have a job in front of you. Iâll take Sage and weâll head out and talk with some folks.â
Sage crossed her arms over her chest. âThis deputy seems legit. Should we trust him?â
âI donât know,â Max said truthfully. âHeâll be our first stop.â
âHe did want to talk with you,â Sage reminded Max.
âSwell.â Max thought for a long moment and then added, âBut we still canât tell him we found Amber.â
âNo way,â Robin said.
Sage nodded and said, âAgreed.â
