Max had just pulled up to the curb at the end of the street near their hotel in downtown Bend when a text came through his screen on his dash.

He was about to answer, when he saw Deputy Spencer come out the front door of their hotel and climb into his sheriff’s department rig out front.

“What do you suppose the deputy wants?” Robin asked.

“No idea,” Max said. “Let’s find out.”

They waited for the deputy to drive away before they got out and headed to the hotel. Along the way, Max texted Sage saying they’d be there shortly.

Max and Robin went into his room to meet up with Sage.

Instead of an ass-chewing, Sage gave Max a hug and a quick kiss on the lips. Then she punched him in the arm and said, “You should have called.”

“My SAT phone needs a charge,” Max said. “And where we went there were zero cell phone bars.”

Sage ran her finders through her silky black hair and then said, “Tell me you found her.”

Robin took this with a smile. “We did. We stayed with her last night and told her to stay put until we figure out what’s going on.”

“Deputy Dog just left,” Sage said.

“We saw that,” Max said. “What did he want?”

Sage told them what the deputy had conveyed to her about the body found in the high desert.

“Amber’s attacker,” Max surmised.

“That’s my guess,” Sage agreed. “What was Amber’s story?”

“Just as we suspected,” Robin interjected. “Attempted kidnapping.” Then she explained what Amber had told them the night before, along with the theory of the strange activity of the judge.

“You think they have a rogue judge?” Sage asked, shaking her head. “That can be damn near impossible to prove.”

Max smiled and turned to his twin sister. “It sounds like we could use a lawyer to review the rulings of the judge.”

“You asshole,” Robin said. Then she pulled a tiny thumb drive from her pocket and smiled.

“What’s that?” Max asked.

“Amber slipped it to me last night,” Robin said. “It’s all the evidence she downloaded from the county system.”

“I hope she encrypted the drive,” he said.

“I have the password,” Robin said.

“Excellent. You have a job in front of you. I’ll take Sage and we’ll head out and talk with some folks.”

Sage crossed her arms over her chest. “This deputy seems legit. Should we trust him?”

“I don’t know,” Max said truthfully. “He’ll be our first stop.”

“He did want to talk with you,” Sage reminded Max.

“Swell.” Max thought for a long moment and then added, “But we still can’t tell him we found Amber.”

“No way,” Robin said.

Sage nodded and said, “Agreed.”
