Nicolas kept pulling his phone out of his pocket during the plane ride. He knew he shouldn’t. He should turn it off, conserve as much battery life as possible since there was still no power on most of the island, but he couldn’t help it. He’d received two texts over the last few days that he had to see to believe were real, apparently multiple times an hour.

The first had been from Rachel. It had come in while he’d been on the phone with Kat coordinating the plan for the kids while he was gone. Kat hadn’t liked the idea from the start, and he knew that if they’d still been married, she would have done everything she could to convince him not to go. Maybe she would have even succeeded. But Nicolas had already made this decision. She just needed to be prepared to have the kids for two weeks.

When he’d hung up from the frustrating phone call, there had been a text from Rachel waiting for him. She’d just been letting him know she’d been thinking of him, but that hadn’t stopped his mind from spiraling into the possibilities. He’d never texted her back before, and he should have. He’d longed to, but nothing had felt right. He’d typed and deleted so many messages. Apologies for being a coward, paragraphs explaining that he needed more time, that he’d been talking to his therapist, but all the hurt from last year was still too raw. At the same time, he’d brushed his thumb over her name, imagining he was caressing her cheek as he fantasized what it would be like to wake up with her in his bed, what he would do to her in that bed.

But as the weeks had dragged on, Nicolas had grown more and more lonely.

At Alan’s advice, Nicolas had attempted using one of those dating apps. He’d gone out on exactly two terrible first dates before he’d deleted the thing and decided online dating definitely wasn’t for him. Not that there had been anything wrong with the women, exactly. They’d both been single mothers, divorcees. They’d mostly talked about their kids, and Nicolas felt zero inclination to know anything more about either of them.

He knew who he really wanted to date; he’d just convinced himself that she didn’t want to date him after his pathetic display at Paradox after she never texted him a second time. But perhaps Nicolas had been too quick to assume he’d driven himself out of the race. Maybe he would try texting her when he got back to the mainland. No, there was no maybe. Nicolas had waited long enough. He would call Rachel when he was back in Kansas.

The second text Nicolas didn’t know what to do with. It was from Blake. The first since that night almost a year ago now. His text hadn’t been all that different from Rachel’s. He’d just been expressing his concern about the hurricane, since he knew most of Nicolas’s extended family still lived on the island.
